Saxon Switzerland is a stunning region located in the eastern part of Germany's Saxony state. It is known for its breathtaking landscapes, towering sandstone cliffs, and winding river valleys. The region is a paradise for nature lovers and photographers alike, with plenty of picturesque locations to capture stunning shots. From the iconic Bastei Bridge to the Königstein Fortress, the region offers a plethora of photography opportunities. The Elbe River, which flows through the region, also provides a stunning backdrop for landscape photography.
The end of an awesome day at an awesome place. I think I filled some memory cards during this trip but indeed it's all about that special moments in the morning and evening.

This is from a recent trip to the "sächsische Schweiz" here in Germany. The sky wasn't what I had hoped for but the light during twilight gave the landscape a nice tint and I emphasized the magenta - green contrast between sky and forest here. I got up at 4am in the morning to get this shot :-) Always the best time to stroll through the landscape. It's such a great feelin to be the only one watching the scene before you, leaning back enjoying the light and occasionally pressing the shutter release.
A nice place I will surely revisit sometime in hope for some dramatic clouds.
I used a 0.6 Lee GND here for the sky, so no DRI as usual from me here :-)
cheers

A rainy weekend in saxony switzerland. Seems like I have no luck with the weather when I head up there. I photographed a lot of streams and forest but I also wanted to photograph those beautiful views. Well here I hiked up to Carola Viewpoint in pouring rain, waited for more than half an hour in pouring rain for a change that didn't come and finally decided to snap a shot and make my way back down. As this is the only photo I took that evening I'm even more pleased with the outcome. I didn't expect much.
cheers
So here's my favourite Image from the photo trip two weeks ago to saxony switzerland. Read closely, that's not switzerland, it's in saxon in germany ;-)
It shows a twilight view from the Winterberg when soft fog was laying over the land. It was awesome standing there watching the earth breathe. After the previous days of the weekend without many good photo opportunities in the area this was one of those moments were you just stand there in awe and then have to remind yourself not to forget taking some photos ;-)
Enjoy!

Last Weekend me and a couple of fellow landscapers from germany went to saxony Switzerland once more. The hopes were high, as usual. We wanted to photograph a view with fog in the valley and some magic light in the sky. But again either we had no fog at all or it completely fogged up.
Here is a view from the Schrammsteinaussicht, I shot during sunrise. We got up 3:15am hiked 45 minutes through the dark and were greeted by clear skies. Not ideal but ok, at least some color was there. We started shooting east, and the light just didn't get as intense as I had hoped. So I switched my position and went to this viewpoint, facing west.
You can bet just as I setup my tripod there I looked back east to see the sky starting to glow very intense. Damn, but it didn't help, it would just be a few minutes and I wanted to shoot another scene.
Yes, the glowing Schrammsteine you see in the photo was what I was after and I have to say it was good I kept my position there. A beautiful display of color as the stones were bathed in the red-orange light.
I used a lee 0.6 soft and lee 0.6 hard gnd here + a polarizer to emphasize the colors

This weekend I was on a photo trip in Saxony Switzerland with some fellow german Landscapers, namely Andywon Dennis_F Niceshoot Maximilian asphericlens Bonnix and Christian who isn't yet here at flickr ;-)
We really didn't have the condidtions we had hoped for the first 2 days. Either it was too much fog and zero sight or it was not enough combined with clear skies and the lack of color in the sky. Anyway we did quite some hiking and exploring and for the last morning we went to the little Winterberg, a 2 mile hike through the dark forest with a little ascend at the end. Not to hard but at least this was early and remote enough so that we didn't have to share the place yet again with 20 other photographers as on the Schrammsteine the evening before (that's another story ;-) ) . I had seen photos of that location but standing there is a completely other experience. It just looks prehistoric and the sight is spectacular. I usually wouldnt expect to find such landscapes in germany. This photo was taken from the Viewpoint called Gleitmannshorn. I loved the light in the sky and the color, how it also was picked up in the foreground by the fallen pine needles.
Hope you get a bit of a feeling how it was standing there :-)
The Bastei is a rock formation rising 194 metres above the Elbe River in the Elbe Sandstone Mountains of Germany. Reaching a height of 305 metres above sea level, the jagged rocks of the Bastei were formed by water erosion over one million years ago. They are situated near Rathen, not far from Pirna southeast of the city of Dresden, and are the major landmark of the Saxon Switzerland National Park. They are also part of a climbing and hiking area that extends over the borders into the Bohemian Switzerland.
Last weekend I was finally able to photograph some decent fog in saxony switzerland. The last years the conditions were never right.
For this view I went up to Lilienstein with Holger were already many spots were taken by other photographers. Luckily the best spot (in my opinion) was still vacant.
Another one. Taken last spring in saxony switzerland. No clouds and no fog but still a beautiful evening.
Did a panorama using Hugin here to get in the complete view.
cheers

The bizarre rock formations around this famous bridge in the Saxonian Sandstone Mountains have always been a strong attraction for tourists as well as photographers. From Dresden, where we were stationed for a few days, this place is only a stone's throw away and we couldn't pass up the opportunity to drop by. Everyone knows the impressive photos of the rocks with rising fog from the Elbe river. The reality on a beautiful autumn day like this and having missed the best morning light as usual, because we slept too long, is less dramatic. The view is impressive no doubt, but you shouldn't expect spectacular pictures on the first try.
