Gullfoss

Gullfoss, also known as the Golden Waterfall, is one of Iceland's most iconic natural wonders. Located in the southwest of the country, this stunning waterfall is a popular destination for tourists and photographers alike. The waterfall is formed by the Hvítá river, which flows through a narrow canyon before plunging down two tiers into a deep crevice. The resulting mist and spray create a magical atmosphere that is perfect for capturing stunning photographs. There are several photography locations around Gullfoss, including viewpoints from above the waterfall and along the riverbank.

This is the second time we go to this place. The first one, two years ago the weather was awful an it was almost impossible to any shot due to wind and rain. In this ocasion the weather was much better and we could enjoy walking through the area, as many other people including many photographers.

This is my version of Gulfoss waterfal. I hope you enjoy looking at it, in the foreground there is the main water stream and in the backgroung you can see the river beyong the waterfal. The sunset gave us nice colors.

Gullfoss (which means "Golden Falls") is a waterfall located in the canyon of the Hvítá river in southwest Iceland. It flows down into a wide curved three-step "staircase" and then abruptly plunges in two stages (11 and 21 meters) into a crevice 32 meters deep. The crevice, about 20 meters wide and 2.5 kilometers in length, extends perpendicular to the flow of the river. The average amount of water running down the waterfall is 140 cubic meters per second in the summer and 80 cubic meters per second in the winter, which makes it the biggest European waterfall by volume. The highest flood measured was 2,000 cubic meters per second (more at Wikipedia).

Bring me sunshine
Gullfoss

The singular most impressive and dramatic waterfall I've had to pleasure to see, Gullfoss in South West Iceland. The sheer power of this falls is hard to take in, you can hear it a long time before you actually see it, definitely a 'wow' moment when it does come into view, something like 140 cubic meters per second falls down into the crevice below!

We were really lucky with the weather here as it had been raining off and on that morning and heavy cloud, luckily it held off here and had some nice golden light, along with the rainbow which appeared and the disappeared again, the one big bonus of these falls opposed to the others we visited on the trip is that there is hardly any spray to contend with as you are a lot higher up allowing me to use filters without wiping the lens every few seconds, a polarizer was just about impossible anywhere else but ideal here with the sun in the right place at this time of day allowing a much more pleasing exposure time.

Gullfoss is one of the three primary attractions of the Golden Circle, Gullfoss is the most impressive and the most appealing for landscape photographers. Unfortunately it was a heavy cloudy and strong windy day when we were there.

I found Gullfoss very difficult to photograph as this consists of multiple stages of zillions of falls. When I shot this, wind was blowing at over 40 mph and the temperature was about 28 deg F.
