Kirkjufell

Kirkjufell is a stunning mountain located in the Snæfellsnes peninsula of Iceland. It is one of the most photographed mountains in the country, and for good reason. The mountain's unique shape and picturesque surroundings make it a popular destination for photographers and nature enthusiasts alike. The area around Kirkjufell offers a variety of photography locations, including waterfalls, beaches, and lava fields. The mountain is particularly beautiful during the winter months when it is covered in snow, and the northern lights can often be seen dancing in the sky above.

Portals to another world
Kirkjufellsfoss
by Pete Rowbottom

It seems like ages since I last uploaded an image to Flickr, mainly due to being away taking pictures, which is no bad thing ! and the considerable amount of time sorting them out and processing them when I've got back, which is taking forever but it's a labour of love....

First one up here from the recent trip to Iceland, where we had some absolutely outrageous weather, that even the Icelandic people described as 'crazy'.

Rather than post a big vista up first I've really gotten into taking very intimate landscape images lately, concentrationg oin small sections of wider landscapes, this one was begging to be shot at Kirkjufell, the normally wild, raging waterfalls tamed by the snow and ice. The water can still be seen flowing beind what I think look like portals or doorways, creating a great contrast to the white snow all around, not somethign I've seen before and it really captured my imagination.

With there being a load of critical detail in the scene I didn't want to crop the image so this is actually made up 36 images, (I know...) 3 shots bracketed for exposure, then repeated 12 times moving left to right. Each 3 images then edited into one image and saved, until all 12 were done and ready to be stitched togther into a 12 shot panorama. Worth a click and having a zoom around.

I wouldn't normally go to this level of trouble but this was shot at 92mm as you couldn't really get a lot closer safely. Had I shot it with a wide angle I would probably have lost around 50% of the final image in cropping it. A pain to process ? - yes, but I get a nice huge file full of detail.

Should print nice and big this one !!

The Iconic Place
Kirkjufellsfoss
by PZ Sunrays

Mount Kirkjufell and falls (Kirkjufellfoss) has been the place that was photographed by the countless people. Simply searching on Flickr alone resulted hundreds, if not thousands, of the photos taken at this place. No wonder it becomes an icon in Iceland. However, I can hardly find two photos identical. By rendering various sky, clouds, sunrise and sunset conditions, mother nature let us take a photo at an unique moment. Probably, this is the reason why people continue taking their photos at this iconic place years after years.

There is no "night" at this time of the year in Iceland. Sunset was at 12:00 am and sunrise at 2:30 am. The photo was taken around 11:30 pm.

The Snæfellsjökull National Park is the first national park that was established in Iceland, the boundaries of which reach out into the sea. Standing at the foot of a volcano and glacier, Snæfellsjökull National Park is the only park that reaches from the seashore to the mountaintops.

The imposing looking Kirkjufell mountain in Grundarfjorour, West Iceland.

A classic view of this conical peak (463m) and for me is definitely one of the defining views in Iceland, waterfalls, odd shaped rock formations and volcanic peaks surrounded by even more mountains bearing the scars of the ice age, absolutely tremendous if you like that kind of thing, as I do.

The weather wasn't the best we could have hoped for here but such is the way of things and I'm always thankful for just having no rain, we got a good 40 minutes shooting here before the rain came again so impeccable timing (or just lucky for once) The overcast weather was ideal for a long exposure and I was initially thinking about black and white but there was still some nice Autumn colour on the mountain. One those shots you know has been done before but so nice to have your own work from a location to add to your collection.

The little bridge on the far left is the remnant of the old road that once ran around the base of the mountains before the new one was built.

Kirkjufell (Icelandic: Church Mountain) is one of the most photographed landmarks in Iceland, and for good reason. This stunning peak, rising up to 463 meters above sea level, is located on the north coast of the Snæfellsnes Peninsula. The unique shape of the mountain, with its steep sides and symmetrical cone, has made it an iconic symbol of Iceland's natural beauty. Kirkjufell was one of the filming locations for Game of Thrones season 6 and 7, featuring as the "arrowhead mountain".

Observer
Kirkjufellsfoss
by Pete Rowbottom

An absolutely freezing cold day at Kirkjufell on the Snaefellsness Peninsula in Iceland.

The waterfalls here at Kirjufellfoss had been reduced to just one stream with the majority of them totally frozen, giving a really different take on the scene from what I had shot here before, this was shot around sunset with a large number of storms rolling past, one of which can be seen drifting past to the left.

I don't usually include people in my shots but couldn't resist this one as the lone person was not only ideal for scale, I like how they are pointing towards the mountain taking a photo.

I spent half the night and an entire morning trying to capture this mountain the way I wanted too, in the end I didn’t quite get what I wanted. I was waiting for a bit of sun to peak through the mountains behind me to shine on the top of the mountain.. but that never happened :/. I still really enjoy this photo, cant control the weather. Hope you enjoy this photo :)

Kirkjufell is a mountain 463-meters or 1519 feet above sea level on the Snæfellsnesnes peninsula in the Western part of Iceland. Standing tall above the small fishing town of Grundarfjörður, Kirkjufell is the most photographed mountain in Iceland, one of the top 10 most beautiful mountains in the world, and yet most recognized as being “Arrow Head Mountain” on Game of Thrones.

Another shot of our recent photo trip to Iceland. This is the place known as Kirkjufell in the area of Grundarfjordur, west Iceland.

In this case I used an ND64 filter to make a long exposure shot (2 minutes) and obtain a blur effect of the clouds. GND 2 stops Hitech filter to reduce the sky luminosity.

After having visited 30+ waterfalls, the Kirkjufellfoss in Grundarfjörður is my favorite. Not as huge as the Skogafoss in South Iceland, this is beautiful with Kirkjufell in the background. I need to visit this spot again to shoot the Aurora Borealis!!!

While most of people focused on the upper part of Kirkjufellfoss to include the iconic Mount Kirkjufell, some photographers targeted the lower part of the waterfall, which rendered a different prospective.

An alternative view of the fantastic Icelandic falls at Kirkjufell, Kirkjufellsfoss. After getting the shot with the classic conical shaped mountain in I wanted to include the snowy rugged tops of the mountains to the rear, yet to receive their first proper coating of snow of the Winter they appear to be have been lightly dusted over with 'icing sugar', a sure sign of things to come in a matter of weeks.....

We visited here quite late in the afternoon and were quite lucky with there being hardly anyone about at all which was great as you could really take your time without worrying about people in the way and also spend that little more time taking in the stunning scenery, much more enjoyable when there's not hoards of tourists (who you are seemingly invisible to).

With the rain closing in yet again on this day it was good to get some shots in the bag of this location I had wanted to visit for a long time, and want to go back to, the only sound was the falls rushing over the rocks and the click of the shutter, how I like it.
