Singapore is a vibrant city-state located in Southeast Asia, known for its stunning architecture, diverse culture, and delicious cuisine. It is also a popular destination for photography enthusiasts, with a plethora of picturesque locations to capture. From the iconic Marina Bay Sands to the colorful Haji Lane, Singapore offers a range of stunning backdrops for photographers to explore. The city's lush green spaces, such as the Gardens by the Bay and the Botanic Gardens, provide a tranquil escape from the bustling cityscape.
A view on Singapore's Helix Bridge, Marina Bay Sands and ArtScience Museum. This iconic location is one of the most visited in Singapore. During the blue hour, all the lights start the shine, a perfect combination of ambient and artificial light.

After a very very very long absence on Flickr, I have decided to start posting again! Hope that there are still people following me here! And I am glad to start with a recent shot from Singapore. It was shot from the Sky Park on top of Marina Bay Sands, during the NPD (National Parade Day) fireworks rehearsal. There are fireworks rehearsal every Saturday, what a great attention for the photographers community! :-) Regarding Flickr, it all started in Singapore 9 years ago when started to post here, and at that time I would have never ever thought that photography would eventually became a full time job!

It was raining, it was grey, but a strange thing happened during blue hour. The lights of the city lit up the lowest clouds, making them white while the higher cloud cover turned blue. And the city lights also added a lot of colour to the water.

Singapore has many HDB's, it's a form of public housing. There are a large variety of flat types and layouts which cater to various housing budgets. Some of them have a stunning design. HDB Block 65 has been shot many times, I wanted to give it a more graphical look.

One the aspects I loved in Singapore is the great abundance of green growth everywhere in the city, around and on the buildings. Every level of the ParkRoyal Hotel had its vegetation.

I'll be off flickr for a few days as I am flying on business trip to Beijing in a few hours. Looking forward to taking some blue hour shots there!
A few things that I dislike about this shot: the huge building in the foreground, and the fisheye distortion (which I have already tried to eliminate to some extent). The best vantage point would be on top of that building! Will try to get there next time ;-)
But I really wanted you to get the widest view as possible. Have a great end of the week!

My first photo in 2018, an evening at the Marina Bay in Singapore with the city's symbol; Merlion in the foreground.
4-picture panorama stitched with Hugin, cylindrical projection. Taken from Gardens by the Bay East just after sunset
Another blue hour upload from my recent trip to Singapore. The Marina Bay Sands is of course a spectacular building, but I found it hard to get a decent shot from a distance across the water. I actually like this up-close-and-personal best.

Louis Vuitton Island Maison Marina Bay Sands Marina Bay, Singapore
Being in one of the most photographed place in the whole of Singapore, I finally can claim that I have a 'fresh' perspective from the Marina Sands area. The image features the newly opened Louis Vuitton Island Maison (opened today to be more exact), which I just realized after surfing the net. It was a happy coincidence that I managed to get hold of a super wide angle lens to be able to include both the Island Maison and the Marina Sands hotel in only one exposure.

A 7 storey pagoda, located in the chinese garden. I was excited to go to this spot, till I arrived. This is not a ancient pagoda, it's a concrete replica. Ok, let's make the best of it, I still can make great shots.
Close to Clarke Quay, I found this Hotel, Furama City Centre. What an interesting architecture, very photogenic. Whatever angle we stand, those lines and curves dominate the street view.
Beautiful view of Singapore's iconic skyline from the Ritz Carlton Millenia. Shot through the glass using the Lenskirt. Worked really well here.

5quid by Ryf Zaini i light Marina Bay Lower broad walk, Marina Bay Sands
Who can resists a colourful 5quid in the heart of the city? I certainly cant! However, capturing this 5quid was no easy task. Due to the confined space, composing the 5quid with the city's skyscrapers as the backdrop without a ultra wide angle lens was a nightmare. (Time to purchase a ultra wide angle lens :)). Making things worst, the 5quid actually changes colour very quickly, hence an increase in ISO to shorten the shutter speed was required. Even with the ISO only at 200, noise in the shadow areas are evident in the image, which is frustrating! Therefore, this shot provided me with adequate number of reasons to have an upgrade on both my lens and camera. (Which I hope to purchase soon)
Comments are appreciated! 1 exp and slight editing in Photoshop!
The ECP or East Coast Parkway is an expressway that runs along the southeastern coast of Singapore. Marina Bay was very calm that night, no wind, no ripples in the water. What a sparkling shot.

Another perspective of the famous Marina Bay Sands, this time from the Promontory @ Marina Bay (I never seems to get bored of photographing it). Since it has been featured in so many other photographer's portfolio, including mine, I doubt that any description is required. The image also features the Singapore Flyer just behind the art and science museum and the balls in the foreground is in preparation for the New Year's day countdown.
4 exp stitched and edited in Photoshop. Comments are appreciated!
Gardens of the Bay is a must see in Singapore. Especially in the evening, there is every night a lightshow in those supertrees. Very impressive.
Bay East Garden Marina Bay Singapore
This shot is taken at the Marina East park which can be accessed via Tanjong Rhu View or Marina Barrage by walking across the bridge. It is not advisable to park at the Marina Barrage during the blue hours as it requires you to walk through a construction site and the gate is open to the public only from 7 am to 7 pm. I learnt that the hard way, left stranded after my phootshoot, I had to walk to Tanjong Rhu before hopping into a taxi back to Marina Barrage to retrieve the car. However, a view like this is definitely worth the inconvenience!

The waterfall inside the Flower Dome is 38 metres high. One of the top attractions in Singapore. I blended several shots to obtain the result. 1 long exposure for the waterfall, 1 normal shot to remove the blurry plants and another shot where I had some nice blue parts in the sky.

St Andrew's Cathedral and Swissotel Stamford, a perfect marriage. I did spent some time finding the right spot, there was constantly a tree or a pole standing in my way. Too close, too much perspective, too far, too many trees. I just wanted those 2 iconic buildings in my frame.

I was amazed by the architecture of this hotel. Many open places and parks are located around it, we can see it from far away. It's a giant building reaching high in the sky. It's called 'Swissotel The Stamford'. It's structure is very cubist and geomotric.

National Day rehearsals Marina Bay Sands Arts and Science museum Marina Bay, Singapore
The final installment of my Marina Bay fireworks trilogy :) After one crazy month of firework hunting, my personal "mini" assignment has come to an end. I think I have captured enough fireworks to last me for a sometime. Even though tomorrow is the actual National Day, I will be 3898km away, spending time with family in Perth. For photographers who are still having difficulty finding the right shuttle speed and aperture to get good fireworks shot at the Marina Bay area, I would recommend an aperture of F13 to F16 (varies between lens, I use a Canon EF 24-105mm F4.0/L lens) and a shuttle speed between 4 to 6 seconds (depending on how intense is the fireworks). A sturdy tripod and a remote release cable are essential too if not the fireworks would be squiggly. I personally like to take a exposure of the overall scene during blue hour (capture more details in the buildings, especially the darker portions) then edit the fireworks into my final shot. However, this requires patience during the editing process as it could take hours to incorporate the fireworks into the shot realistically. I am aware that some SOOC Photographers (Purist) would be screaming "Photoshop cheat!" at this point but I feel that I am merely providing a rendition of the scene, something that I envisioned and it may or may not be an accurate account of the event. Even during the days of film, photographers are able to clone elements into the negative in darkroom. Therefore I hope that the viewer would enjoy my humble interpretation of this firework extravaganza!.
