Newport - Yaquina Bay Bridge

The Yaquina Bay Bridge is an arch bridge that spans Yaquina Bay south of Newport, Oregon. It is one of the most recognizable of the U.S. Route 101 bridges designed by Conde McCullough. The Yaquina Bay Bridge is one of eleven major bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway designed by McCullough. It superseded the last ferry crossing on the highway.

Work on the Yaquina Bay Bridge began on August 1, 1934. The main arch was built in toward the center from the anchorages, using tiebacks to support the arch until it could be closed. The piers are supported by timber pilings driven to a depth of about 70 feet (21 m) below sea level. The project received funding from the Public Works Administration.

The bridge uses Art Deco and Art Moderne design motifs as well as forms borrowed from Gothic architecture. The Gothic influence is seen in the balustrade, which features small pointed arches, and in the arches of the side span piers. The ends of the bridge are augmented by pedestrian plazas that afford a view of the bridge and provide access to the parks at the landings by stairways. Pedestals were provided for proposed sculptures of seals, but the statues were never executed.

When we made a proper road trip through the beautiful state of Oregon, we planned on driving to Portland via the Pacific coast road before traveling inland and then finally returning home via central Oregon. One thing we underestimated was the sheer beauty of the coast. Now we made our trip during summer, which is not the best time to visit the beach, but the rugged beauty of this stunning landscape still blows you away. We ended up making way more stops than we initially planned and reached Portland a day late.

A couple of weeks ago, I posted a shot of the Yaquina Head light from a nearby beach, today's image is from a nearby cliffside showing a nearby haystack full of wild birds and the surf. The classic composition here is at eye level, which I felt was compressing the rolling coastal cliffs a little too much. So, I dropped down to the floor and tried to bring as much of the vegetation into focus as well. This composition resulted in a bit of the bottom of the lighthouse being hidden but I preferred the emphasis on the rugged coastline.

Last picture concludes all the locations we visited on our first to road trip to Oregon. It was a lot of fun and we got to experience so many beautiful locations and meet a lot of nice people. So far the two road trips my wife and I did were so much fun that we are seriously considering making it an annual tradition.

Here is another shot I made of the Yaquina head lighthouse. We were there for sunrise and the tide was out so we decided to venture down to the pebble beach and the view from the beach was spectacular. This Panorama shot was made with about 6 shots stitched together. Hope you all like it more to follow.

Nye Beach bench, Oregon
Nye Beach bench, Oregon
by Bonnie Moreland

In the early 1800s, the beach that would become Nye Beach was demarcated to the south by the Yaquina River and a rocky outcropping known as Jump-off Joe. In those days, Jump-off Joe extended into the sea and posed an obstacle to beach traffic. By the mid-20th century, coastal erosion had caused the sea stack to separate from the cliff, develop an arch, and finally crumble, leaving only a scattering of rock formations to mark the spot. Without this natural barrier nothing remains to separate Nye Beach from Agate Beach State Recreation Site to the north
