Catamarca

Nestled in the northwest of Argentina, Catamarca emerges as a captivating province that seamlessly blends natural beauty with cultural richness. Known for its rugged landscapes, ancient traditions, and colonial architecture, Catamarca offers a unique canvas for photographers seeking to capture the essence of this enchanting region. The province boasts a diverse array of photography locations, ranging from the otherworldly landscapes of the Valle de la Luna (Valley of the Moon) to the serene beauty of the Ambato Dam. The vibrant colors of local markets and the intricate details of colonial-era churches provide endless opportunities for photographers to showcase the authentic charm of Catamarca.

Sunset in Dunes
Dunas de Taton
by Jiri Hajek

Afternoon in the Puna de Atacama region usually brings a strong wind, which makes very interesting conditions at the Dunes of Tatón. The wind carries sand, which scatters and softens the light. The conditions just before sunset are amazing for photography!

You just have to be careful, as the sand gets everywhere and could damage your equipment. I didn't use tripod due to the wind and used two bodies in order to have both wide and tele-lenses, without the need to switch them in the dusty conditions.

All in all, a very enjoyable evening! The wind settled down soon after the sunset making the dusk better.

Getting there: The dunes are easily accessible by a dirt road from Fiambalá, about 30 km to the North. Local 4WD vehicles even drive right into to dunes, but it isn't necessary, you can park next to the road, walk few hundreds meters and find your favorite composition there.
