Church of San Nicolás
Church of San Nicolás
by jim stephenw

The Church of San Nicolás is considered as Valencia’s Sistine Chapel. This church, like most in the city, was built on Roman foundations and converted from a mosque in the 12th century. The reason to visit is the ceiling which is covered in frescoes. which have recently been cleaned and restored to their magnificent original condition.

Built on the site of a Roman temple, which later became a mosque, the origins of the cathedral date back to the 13th century. It has various architectural styles, from the Romanesque to the baroque, as can be observed on the three doors: The main door, or Puerta de los Hierros, is baroque; the Puerta de los Apóstoles is gothic and the Puerta del Palau is Romanesque. The Miguelete belfry was built in the 13th and 14th centuries and was designed by Andrés Juliá Torre; it is octagonal, 50.85m high and built in a markedly baroque style, next to the main entrance. There is a spiral stairway inside that leads to the terrace, where there are views of the city, the countryside and the sea.

Port Vell

Port Vell: in English 'Old Harbour') is a waterfront harbour in Barcelona, Catalonia, Spain, and part of the Port of Barcelona. It was built as part of an urban renewal program prior to the 1992 Barcelona Olympics. Before this, it was a run-down area of empty warehouses, railroad yards, and factories. 16 million people visit the complex each year. It is now a focal point of the city and tourist attraction, containing the Maremàgnum (a mall containing shops, a multiplex cinema, bars and restaurants), IMAX Port Vell and Europe's largest aquarium containing 8000 Fish and 11 sharks contained in 22 basins filled with 6 million litres (1.5 million gallons) of sea water. A pedestrian walkway, Rambla de Mar, connects La Rambla to Port Vell. It incorporates a swing bridge, in order to allow ships to enter and exit the harbour.

The Shadow of the Wind

Small tribute to a great writer, Carlos Ruiz Zafón

The Calle Bisbe bridge that links the Generalitat with the Casa dels Canonges is one of the most famous postcards of Barcelona. There is no tourist who does not take a photograph of the walkway, one of the icons of the Barri Gòtic. And that, despite the fact that the bridge is not even 100 years old. Indeed, it was one of the elements added in the 1920s during the rehabilitation of the city's historic center.

Taking photos of this corner is not an easy task, or at least it did not seem so to me. Although it is one of the most famous pictures of Barcelona.

The Royal College Seminary of Corpus Christi, known as the Patriarch, is an institution founded in 1583 by San Juan de Ribera, whose statue appears in the middle of the tiled courtyard. Above the courtyard is the private living quarters of the priests. There is also the Chapel of Corpus Christi, with an ornately painted ceiling and light-filled dome, and a museum containing two Caravaggio paintings and works by El Greco, Ribera and Flemish masters. The museum also houses the manuscript that Thomas More was writing while awaiting his execution in the Tower of London.
