Loch Duich Scottish Highlands
On a damp and overcast winter's morning how about a reminder of warmer times? Eilean Donan Castle is a spectacular spot on its little island, just east of the village of Dornie. I was lucky enough to be there when the tide was in, and as the sea was flat calm the reflections were almost perfect.
Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland and sits at the meeting point of three Lochs, namely Lochs, Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh.
Eilean Donan Castle is one of the most recognised castles in Scotland, a Scottish icon and certainly one of the most popular visitor attractions in the Highlands. When you first set eyes on it, it is easy to understand why so many people flock to its stout doors year after year. Strategically located on its own little island, overlooking the Isle of Skye, at the point where three great sea-lochs meet, namely Loch Duich, Loch Long and Loch Alsh, and surrounded by the majestic splendour of the forested mountains of Kintail, Eilean Donan’s setting is truly breath-taking.

SCOTLAND 2012 - Eilan Donan Castle
I've driven past Eilean Donan castle countless times almost without a second glance on my way to bigger and better things - mountains! However, I was stopped in my tracks early one morning, and just had to capture the scene. The sky was moody, the light golden, the air was still and best of all the tide was in which covered the seaweed and gave almost perfect reflections. It may be a 'honeypot' but in those conditions it would be rude not to stop!
The castle was founded in the thirteenth century, and became a stronghold of the Clan Mackenzie and their allies the Clan MacRae. In the early eighteenth century, the Mackenzies' involvement in the Jacobite rebellions led in 1719 to the castle's destruction by government ships. Lieutenant-Colonel John Macrae-Gilstrap's twentieth-century reconstruction of the ruins produced the present buildings.
