The Downtown Core is a 266-hectare urban planning area in the south of the city-state of Singapore. The Downtown Core surrounds the mouth of the Singapore River and southeastern portion of its watershed, and is part of the Central Area, Singapore's central business district. It is one of the most dense areas in Singapore, even more than other divisions in the Central Area, to the extent that much of it is filled with skyscrapers. (Wikipedia)

Another blue hour upload from my recent trip to Singapore. The Marina Bay Sands is of course a spectacular building, but I found it hard to get a decent shot from a distance across the water. I actually like this up-close-and-personal best.

I walked in this area many times. This view on the business district still amazes me. By day or night, I made several shots of it in different light conditions.

Singapore Sunset Reflections
Singapore Celebrations III
by J. Chea

Marina Bay Sands Marina Bay, Singapore

It is always difficult to capture a city when facing the direction of the sunset all in one exposure. The exposure difference makes it impossible not to use the neutral density graduated filter and with building jutting out all over the place, placement of the filter becomes a problem too. Hence to make the best out of the situation, I placed my neutral density soft graduated filter at an angle and wiggle it about during the exposure . This beautiful sunset and fairly calm water only lasted for less than one minute. I count myself fortunate to be able to witness and capture the moment.

i light: 5quid in the city
5quid by Ryf Zaini
by J. Chea

5quid by Ryf Zaini i light Marina Bay Lower broad walk, Marina Bay Sands

Who can resists a colourful 5quid in the heart of the city? I certainly cant! However, capturing this 5quid was no easy task. Due to the confined space, composing the 5quid with the city's skyscrapers as the backdrop without a ultra wide angle lens was a nightmare. (Time to purchase a ultra wide angle lens :)). Making things worst, the 5quid actually changes colour very quickly, hence an increase in ISO to shorten the shutter speed was required. Even with the ISO only at 200, noise in the shadow areas are evident in the image, which is frustrating! Therefore, this shot provided me with adequate number of reasons to have an upgrade on both my lens and camera. (Which I hope to purchase soon)

Comments are appreciated! 1 exp and slight editing in Photoshop!

National Day rehearsals Benjamin Sheares bridge (ECP) Marina Bay, Singapore

See it in more detail: www.flickr.com/photos/jcheaphotography/7668060860/sizes/k... [sadly I dont have a Pro account to upload it in larger size :( ]

This shot is probably half a year in the making. I know it sounds ridiculously long but having never really explored the vicinity of the bridge I took me some time to locate the staircase that would lead to this exact portion of the bridge. On top of that, I have always found the Marina Bay floating platform an eyesore. It just seemed so out-of-place with all the other modern architecture surrounding it. Therefore, I knew that an event would be necessary to make it more appealing to photograph and National Day rehearsals would be the best fit.

After finding my spot on the bridge, I realized that photographing this scene would not be easy due to the vibrations originating from the vehicles zooming pass behind me. Frequent tremors are a norm and these vibrations could easily kill my shot. Getting one long exposure was difficult, not to mention I had to take six different exposures for this super pano. In the end, I had to increase the ISO to 400 (which was well within the comfort zone of the 5D Mark II) so as to achieve a faster shutter speed (I didn't want to compromise my depth of view) and cross my fingers that no speed demons would be passing behind me when I depress my cable release.

Adding salt to injury, the wind picked up and it started to drizzle lightly when the firework display was on. My camera strap was flapping around in the wind and I was very concerned that my setup would just crash into the ground behind me. I secured the strap around my neck and fired the last few shots. Lastly, I also managed to dodge a heavy downpour as I ran into the Marina Bay Sands shopping complex. Wow! I have to say this photoshoot was definitely one of the most intense that I have undergone. Thankfully, I managed to come up with a relatively decent shot, with the exception of any good light trails in the foreground.

6 exp pano and 2 exp for the fireworks, edited in Photoshop! Comments and constructive criticisms are appreciated!!

After a very very very long absence on Flickr, I have decided to start posting again! Hope that there are still people following me here! And I am glad to start with a recent shot from Singapore. It was shot from the Sky Park on top of Marina Bay Sands, during the NPD (National Parade Day) fireworks rehearsal. There are fireworks rehearsal every Saturday, what a great attention for the photographers community! :-) Regarding Flickr, it all started in Singapore 9 years ago when started to post here, and at that time I would have never ever thought that photography would eventually became a full time job!

St Andrew's Cathedral and Swissotel Stamford, a perfect marriage. I did spent some time finding the right spot, there was constantly a tree or a pole standing in my way. Too close, too much perspective, too far, too many trees. I just wanted those 2 iconic buildings in my frame.

Singapore Flyer Marina Bay Singapore

A slightly less iconic view taken from the Singapore Flyer (the world's largest observatory wheel). The thing that caught my attention as I was composing this image was the roads and the light trails. Being on a moving platform, long shutter speeds were out of the question. After some experimentation, shuttle speed of a second seemed to be the charm.

View it large and see how many buildings can you name :) www.flickr.com/photos/jcheaphotography/8753834920/sizes/l... Let me start off...

Singapore is full of fancy restaurants and bars. This one is located at Marina Bay, just next the main theatre. I knew we could get on top of it, but I had to ask for it. Once above, wawww, what a view. I love Singapore for their awesome architecture and views. I was just on time for the blue hour shots.

Level 57 And Beyond I
Singapore - View from Marina Bay Sands
by Alec Lux

I was standing in the bar Level 57 in Marina Bay Sands. Normally it is difficult to use your tripod there. I went the night before having a few drinks to see where I could place my tripod. That evening was crowded. I asked a nice lady if it was possible to reserve my spot for the day after, nope, bad luck. 10min later she came back to me. Where would you like to be? I showed ther the corner. The day after, I arrived at 18h, I saw they had closed a third of the bar, specially for me. Woohoow, I guess my bad luck turned into a phenomenal luck. I immediately phoned a friend, to come and join me. He was astonished we had that much space.

Most of the time I'm not an early person. But for this location I just felt I had to do it. Even the metrostations weren't open yet. I had to be there at 6am to grab the first glimps of light, choosing the best spot, framing and waiting. For this shot I combined a long exposure with 5 bracketed shots.

Fountain Of Wealth

This is called 'The Fountain Of Wealth'. When I was setting up for this shot, there were suddenly 15 kids jumping between the lit waterjets. Inside I was yelling, nooooo, please, it's not the moment. I had to take about 20 pics to blend the different parts together. It has been a hell of a job, removing the kids and matching the shifting colors of the jets.

I was amazed by the architecture of this hotel. Many open places and parks are located around it, we can see it from far away. It's a giant building reaching high in the sky. It's called 'Swissotel The Stamford'. It's structure is very cubist and geomotric.

Centennial Tower

Centennial Tower is a 158m office skyscraper in the central business district of Singapore. I didn't like the sides of the building. But the front was mindblowing. The curved side reflected the light in a very interesting way. To get the best effect, I tried to use the polariser in different angles. Even got security coming out. Hey, what are you doing? It ended with a half hour cool chat. After that, I broke my polariser, while I was putting everything away.

Fountain of wealth (Suntec City)
Fountain of wealth (Suntec City)
by J. Chea

Fountain of wealth Suntec City Temasek Boulvard, Singapore

This is a "fresh" perspective of the fountain of wealth located at the Suntec city complex. It also features one of the last remaining roundabouts (probably the busiest) in Singapore (the other one that I can think of is in Marine Parade). During certain periods of the day, the fountain is turned off and visitors are allowed to walk around mini fountain at the centre of fountain's base for good luck (which is quite the opposite when you are trying to photograph it). Another let down was the trees in front of the fountain which makes that part of the scene a little 'messy'. The only reason why I decided to post it is that I like the interesting light trails made by passing vehicles. I guess things doesn't always go the way you want it to!

Other buildings featured are Suntec city's tower 5, Suntec city's convention centre, Conrad Centennial, Marina Mandarin hotel and lastly The Sail@ Marina bay.
