Clouds are rare in Dubai. Luckily that night I was not sleeping at 3am, and noticed the clouds, so I took my gear out to grab a couple of long exposures. At 4am, most of the clouds were gone.

Dubai Marina :: From Past to Future
Dubai Marina
by Daniel Cheong

'L' for the best view!

A traditional dhow boat cruising in the Dubai futuristic marina. I always wanted to do this shot, but it was always a challenge to get the timing right, i.e. having the dhow boat to be in this spot during the blue hour.

Multi-exposures Digital Blending, the boat had to be shot at high ISO, high aperture, high shutter speed, and I also wanted a silky water effect with a very long exposure. In the end, a shot that no human eye can ever experience in real :-)

Deconstruction of the shot: Water: 15 sec at f/8 ISO 200 Buildings: 1, 4 & 8 sec at f/8 ISO 200 Boat: 1/8 sec at f/4 ISO 1000, shot 8 minutes before the other exposures (when there was still more light which was good, but I did not have a choice anyway!)

Welcome to the Dubai Marina Show!
Dubai Marina from Horizon Tower
by Daniel Cheong

There is a little story behind this shot. As usual, a buddy and I were trying to make our way (illegally) to the roof top of a building. Usual strategy, enter the building, go to the elevator, (I use the 'phone call' trick, i.e. walking with my phone, pretending to be on a call with the friend I am visiting upstairs).

Well, we managed to get to 48th floor on the roof top (which also had an accessible helipad). Unfortunately the view was not great, all the downward view obstructed by a huge ledge. But we still decided to setup the tripods and start shooting.

After 10 minutes, we heard some noise, and saw light coming off the staircase, a security guard was coming up! Little adrenaline rush, we tried to run and avoid the guy, but he managed to catch us... Well, I offered him a financial compensation for the trouble, which he accepted.

But then, he started telling us that there was a place on the 21st floor near the machines room with a great view, so we went there, and indeed the view was awesome, never shot before as far as I know. So here it is! It was definitely worth to pay a bribe!

My first shot using a fisheye, thanks to my buddy Rajesh who sold it to me (he does not need it anymore for his full frame D700 camera). Very challenging indeed to find a suitable composition for this lens. This tiny lens is really razor sharp, I am very impressed.

I am again not very active on flickr these days and lagging behind comments. Sorry about that! I'll catch up, but slowly! ;-)

LARGE View

I hope you are not bored with my Dubai Marina shots, but that's all I can offer now due to lack of time, since this is the closest place from home I can shoot! ;-) The building where I live is visible on this shot (see note).

Well at last a blue hour shot with some moving clouds!

My typical Digital Blending recipe: one long exposure for at f/22 for the sky, two exposures at f/8 for the buildings, one exposure at f/2.8 ISO 800 for the boats (they were moving quite a bit).

I had the chance to get access to the 101th floor of a building under construction in Dubai Marina. Amazing 360 views from there. I will start with a non blue hour shot for a change :)

You can clearly see the fully illuminated Palm Jumeirah Island on the background. The tower on the left is the Princess Tower (95 floors), from which I took the fog shots. The cool shaped tower on the right is Ocean Heights (83 floors), from which I also have a series of shots. And the tower in the middle is the Elite Residence (91 floors).

The world's tallest residential building ("Pentominium") is currently under construction in Dubai Marina and will have 122 floors.

Infinity Vertigo
View from Cayan Tower
by Daniel Cheong

Fujifilm Middle East & Africa kindly loaned me their latest X-E2, with the Fujinon 14mm. They promised me the 10-24mm when it will be available, sometime in February.

So this is my first shot with the Fujifilm X-E2 & Fujinon 14mm

This is shot from the 73th floor rooftop of the twisted Cayan Tower (formerly known as Infinity Tower) in Dubai Marina. You can clearly see the twisting angle, even though it is not as dramatic as seen from the ground level.

This is a shot I always wanted to do, but I could only do it with very light camera such as the Fujifilm X-E2. This was shot handheld, using a monopod, and me holding the monopod 1.5 meters away from the building. Hence I had to shoot at a minimum shutter speed of 1/30s, I had to push the X-E2 to its limits. This is a Vertical Panorama, 2 shots at f/2.8, 1/30s, ISO 3200!

I used a climbing rope to secure the camera to the monopod, and the monopod to my body, to avoid any catastrophic event.

It was fun yet challenging, no way to compose the shot, so I had to shoot 'blindly' and try several orientations of the camera.
