Mardale Green Village
by Pete Rowbottom

Welcome to Mardale Green Village in the English Lake District, or rather what is left of it....

After a huge dry spell and heavy water use the water level in Haweswater has dropped to under 40% full, this means that for the first time since 1995, some 26 years ago! this section of the former Mardale Green Village the usually lies fully underwater was now visible.

Mardale Green used to be a tiny Cumbrian Farming Village, complete with a Church, and a Pub, in the 1930's the village was evacuated as the demand for water grew, the Village was largely flattened by the Army, and Haweswater Reservoir that we see today was created to supply water to far away Manchester! There was a public outcry at the time, but it was not heeded and the controversial plans went ahead. All the bodies from the Church Cemetery were exhumed and moved to another Cemetery in the neighbouring village of Shap.

The walls despite being underwater for nearly 100 years are in remarkable condition, a testament to the hardy fell folks who built them!

I had a good while shooting here with both the regular camera and the drone to document it all, and couldn't resist this long exposure image using the stone walls of an old road leading into the water, after all I may have to wait another 26 years for this to happen again!
