Portland Head Light is a historic lighthouse in Cape Elizabeth, Maine that sits at the entrance of the shipping channel into Casco Bay. The headlight was the first built by the United States government, and is now a part of Fort Williams Park.
As one of the most photographed lighthouses in the US I was very eager to get this one right. Also one fellow photographer I me while at Annisquam Light told me that the Portland Head light ticks all the boxes to be a perfect lighthouse shot. I have a couple of more interesting shots and I will post them as get the time.

When we made a proper road trip through the beautiful state of Oregon, we planned on driving to Portland via the Pacific coast road before traveling inland and then finally returning home via central Oregon. One thing we underestimated was the sheer beauty of the coast. Now we made our trip during summer, which is not the best time to visit the beach, but the rugged beauty of this stunning landscape still blows you away. We ended up making way more stops than we initially planned and reached Portland a day late.
A couple of weeks ago, I posted a shot of the Yaquina Head light from a nearby beach, today's image is from a nearby cliffside showing a nearby haystack full of wild birds and the surf. The classic composition here is at eye level, which I felt was compressing the rolling coastal cliffs a little too much. So, I dropped down to the floor and tried to bring as much of the vegetation into focus as well. This composition resulted in a bit of the bottom of the lighthouse being hidden but I preferred the emphasis on the rugged coastline.

Its been a while since I posted any lighthouse pictures. As a landscape photographer, one architecture element that fascinates me is lighthouses. The fact that usually they are located on a rocky and exciting coastline is just a bonus. I love everything about lighthouses, the history, architecture style, and about the fascinating characters who managed them.
I have posted today's image before on Flickr, albeit in b&w format. But this setting is so pretty, and I decided to re-upload them in full color. The lighthouse is called the Castle Hille lighthouse, and its located in the Narragansett Bay. It's one of the star attractions of the Rhode Island coastline, and I took this shot just before I moved to sunny California.
If you are a scenic byway nerd like I am, highway 12 in southern Utah should be on your list. The route is about 120 miles, and the sheer number of stunning locations accessible from this highway is staggering. We traveled on this road after getting caught up in a full-blown snowstorm at Bryce. We were one of the first people who left Bryce after the storm, and it was like driving through a winter wonderland. The snow looked untouched, and the contrast of white against the brilliant red of the landscape was nothing.
Red Canyon, Bryce Canyon NP, Kodachrome Basin SP, Grand Staircase-Escalante NM, Escalante Petrified Forest SP, Calf Creek Falls, Boulder Mountain, Capitol Reef NP, Blue Hills, and Hole in the wall road are some of the stunning locations accessible from scenic byway 12. I took this image at the Head of the rocks overlook, a scenic overlook with 360-degree views. I noticed this mountain in the distance and thought it would be the right candidate for a telephoto landscape image. I later learned that the mountain's name is Mt Pennell, an 11,413 ft peak, which the second tallest of the Henry Mountains, just behind Mt Ellen. The snowstorm cleared the view a lot, and the contrast between the red landscape of the foreground and the mountain in full snow glory was stunning. I cannot wait to get back to southern Utah and do a bit more exploring.

Castle Hill Lighthouse is located on Narragansett Bay in Newport, Rhode Island at the end of the historic Ocean Drive and is an active navigation aid for the United States Coast Guard and boaters entering the East Passage between Jamestown, Rhode Island on Conanicut Island, and Newport, Rhode Island on Aquidneck Island. The lighthouse was completed in 1890 on property formerly belonging to the famous naturalist, oceanographer, and zoologist Alexander Agassiz of Harvard University.
This an old picture that I took during my east coast days. This photo was largely abandoned since I had trouble getting a decent enough output from focus stacking the four images. I wanted to try my luck again with all the advancements in photoshop in recent years and lo and behold photoshop processed a great output this time with great focus across the frame. While processing the image, I had a feeling that this shot will work better as a black & white as the colors were pretty mute from this angle but contrast was plenty with this image. So I showed my wife both the color and monochrome outputs and she voted for this one. Thanks for visiting.
