Kirkwall

A quite surreal and freaky looking (I think) long exposure minimalistic take on a grand old shipwreck at Inganess bay, mainland Orkney, just outside of Kirkwall. Unsurprisingly I got the now traditional good soaking getting this shot, many thanks to the kindly couple who stopped to take me back the 3 miles into town upon seeing me walking in the rain.

Built in 1918 as the SPRUCOL, and subsequently renamed the JUNIATA, she has been here a long time, she was sunk 7 April 1940 on the seaward side of Barrier No 4 between Burray and South Ronaldsay. In 1949 JUNIATA was refloated as part of a salvage attempt. Whilst being towed away, intended for scrap, the ship ran aground and beached off Inganess Bay, where you see her here.
