Crater Lake, panoramic view
Crater Lake
by janos.hajas@yahoo.de

This picture has been stitched together from 8 individual pictures. The Crater Lake was formed ~ 7700 years ago in the caldera after the eruption and collapse of Mount Mazama. It has the cleanest water in the USA, almost free of suspended particles, it is also very deep, that´s why the color appears as dark blue. The volcanic cone shaped island on the left is Wizard Island (4400 years old), the small islet on the right is named as Phantom Ship island.

Getting to this lake takes some determination and a nice 4 wheel drive vehicle.

However, the view will be divine. Indeed, it is because of this view, this incredible location, that Summit Lake Campground is an absolute gem in spite of itself. The lake rewards every effort, and the campground provides some of the more open camping areas around the lake. To be sure, there are plenty of pullouts along the primitive roads that follow the north and west shores, but most are in the dense lodgepole and ponderosa growth and miss the sun.

Third day of the trip we started out by visiting the Crater Lake National Park in Oregon. This was to be the most tedious day in our trip as we were to drive the most number of miles this day and I was hoping to get the Crater Lake done as fast as possible. As usual we both over slept and were quite late by the time we reached here. Even under pretty stark lighting conditions Crater Lake blows you away with its deep clear blue waters, it is one of the cleanest bodies of water on the planet as it is only fed by precipitation. It is also the deepest lake in the USA at about 1943 ft and the 7th deepest in the world.

There are two islands in Crater Lake, Wizard Island from a cinder cone that erupted after Crater Lake began to fill with water, and Phantom Ship Island with seven different trees living on it. There are also colonies of violet green swallows, and several varieties of wildflowers and lichens living there.

I truly hope I get an opportunity to go here once again ad shoot at my own pace..

Another shot from our third day and this again on the Crater Lake National Park. We were doing a rim drive of this beautiful location and found this area where a small land slide has occurred and the dust was slowly settling down to the lake bed. The stunning clarity of the lake make it possible to see the dust particle so clearly and make the dust particles seem like suspended gold particles in these sapphire blue waters. This was quite a sight and its one of those sights which stays with you and I could have never imagined seeing something like that here.

When you hear that the lake is clearest in the world and has brilliant blue waters you simply don’t imagine how clear and stunning this place is and you will spend more time than budgeted. If you are in southern Oregon or Northern California please make time and try to visit this beautiful and only National park of Oregon, its spectacular and will blow you away..

Thanks for visiting!
