Another shot of the Yaquina head light. I am still amazed by the number of different compositions that were possible at this location. I took this shot while we were walking away from the lighthouse using the road as a leading line to the lighthouse.

Hope everyone like it..

Wow I have been blown away by the responses I have been getting for my past couple of posts, when I started posting pics of our Oregon trip I was hoping that maybe one of them might make explore but this is just unbelievable. I sincerely thank everyone for all the encouragement.

So in keeping with the current scheme, here is a shot of the Yaquina head lighthouse located just minutes away from Newport, OR. I had originally planned to shoot this location for sunset but I had under estimated the distance so we reached Newport quite late. So we decided to make it her for sunrise but again we overslept and by the time we reached the sun had already risen.

Opened in 1873 Yaquina head light is a beautiful lighthouse located in an even more pretty location. Since we reached quite early we had the place all to ourselves and I was able to create this moody image of the lighthouse with the golden field in front of it. Thanks again for visiting my photostream, hope you like this one..

Another shot of the stunningly beautiful Heceta head lighthouse from Heceta headlands. This location from where I took this shot is actually quite far from the actual lighthouse and you are reliant of a 70-200 for composition here. We actually went all the way up to the lighthouse to check out some of the compositions around the lighthouse.

As you can see from the image, the lighthouse is perched on the slope of a pretty steep hill. There are hiking trails which zig zags its way on to the top of the hill but the dense vegetation makes it very difficult to find a good composition where you can frame the lighthouse along with the sprawling coastal land to the south. Moreover, there are signs posted on some areas requesting visitors to stay on the track while they are restoring some of the hillsides. If you trample on vegetation too much, they die off and expose the entire hillside to erosion and considering the amount of rain Oregon’s coast gets in a year, we decided to heed the instructions posted.

Another shot of the beautiful Oregon coast, this time from the outlook point overlooking Haceta head lighthouse. I missed this little beauty on our last trip but this was one of my must see places for this trip.

Here is a bit of history as per the Wikipedia page; Heceta Head is named after the Spanish explorer Bruno de Heceta, who explored the Pacific Northwest during the late 18th century. Before him, Heceta Head was a spot of frequent fishing and hunting by the Native American tribes that populated the area. Heceta Head is part of the Siuslaw Indians' traditional land. They hunted sea lions in the area and gathered sea bird eggs from the offshore rocks. In 1888, white settlers moved into the area and claimed 164 acres (66 ha) of the surrounding land. That same year, the U.S. Lighthouse Service approved the building of the lighthouse, and the government bought 19 acres (7.7 ha), out of the 164 acres (66 ha) previously purchased, for the lighthouse structures.

I wish I'd soon be able to come back here during storm season and get some nice sunset shots.

This is Yaquina (ya -QUEEN- ah) Head Lighthouse in Newport, not to be confused with Yaquina Bay Lighthouse.

The 93 foot tower is located on a narrow point of land jutting due west, nearly 1 mile into the Pacific Ocean north of Newport, at Yaquina Head Outstanding Natural Area.

Winds and rain have buffeted this lighthouse since its beginning in 1872. It took approximately one year, and over 370,000 bricks to construct Oregon’s tallest lighthouse.

The light has been active since Head Keeper Fayette Crosby walked up the 114 steps, to light the wicks on the evening of August 20, 1873. At that time the oil burning fixed white light was displayed from sunset to sunrise. Today, the fully automated first order Fresnel lens runs on commercial power and flashes its unique pattern of 2 seconds on, 2 seconds off, 2 seconds on, 14 seconds off, 24 hours a day. The oil burning wicks have been replaced with a 1000 watt globe.

The nightly vigil of watching the light is gone as are the resident keepers and their quarters, but the staff of the Bureau of Land Management, who are now responsible for the tower, would love to guide you through the lighthouse with tales of yesteryear.
