Mersey sunset

At a bit of a loose end I decided to pop over to Liverpool to try and get a night panorama of the City reflected into the Mersey from the Wirral side of the water, I was quite early to avoid the traffic so decided to come to New Brighton first and have a go at sunset, the tide was meant to be well on its way out so usually you can get some interesting forground here.

This one was one of the last I shot from the evening, these rocks had been covered up by the sea but emerged once the tide had receded enough to make for an interesting foreground, the panorama didn't happen as the Mersey wasn't still enough but it was worth the journey to shoot the sunset here and scout out a few locations in Birkenhead for when the conditions are better.

New Brighton Lighthouse or Perch Rock Lighthouse, is a decommissioned lighthouse situated at the confluence of the River Mersey and Liverpool Bay on an outcrop off New Brighton known locally as Perch Rock. Together with its neighbour, the Napoleonic era Fort Perch Rock, it is one of the Wirral's best known landmarks. - Wikipedia

New Brighton Lighthouse, originally known as Perch Rock Lighthouse after the navigation hazard that it marks, came into operation in 1830 and continued as a navigation beacon until 1st October 1973, when it became a victim of modern navigation technology. The tower rises 90ft above the rock, the first half of which is solid. To gain access when the tide is out a ladder is needed to reach the first of the 15 iron rungs built in to the side of the tower that lead up to the door. A spiral staircase leads to the keepers' accommodation consisting of a galley/kitchen, a bathroom, a living room and a bedroom and then up to the lamp room. www.photographers-resource.co.uk/a_heritage/lighthouses/L...

I know what you’re thinking, does he go anywhere else? Well I haven’t put one in for nearly two weeks and we’ve had some really nice weather so it would be rude not to really, just think of the ones you’ll be missing out on in winter when the sun has done one over the other side of Wallasey........

It seems a while since I've done any black & white work, and it wasn't the intention today, an impromptu trip to New Brighton to shoot the sunset didn't really get off the ground due the vast amount of cloud that seemingly appeared from nowhere (despite it being glorious all day) spoiled the show apart from one tiny area of colour in the distant horizon, that said the cloud covering was ideal for this sort of stuff and the low light worked well to give a nice long exposure.

I need to come over here more often, I think I'm put off as it's such a common place to shoot but in the right conditions it's possible to come away with something interesting & different each time if you have the patience.

Prior to construction of the breakwater and the nearby fort, this area was described as a sandy waste and used by wreckers to lure ships aground.

One of 2 images I managed to get from the 'sunset that never appeared trip' to New Brighton, this was a tricky image to get as the tide was really coming in quickly and the ground was very uneven on the breakwater so a bit of a balancing act was needed.

The light was hitting the lighthouse nicely from the side and plenty of cloud made a long exposure an attractive option, the tide was in against the breakwater in front of me and it was coming in around the back of me a lot more slowly, by the time I had set up and taken two images here it was time to go as the previously dry area right at the side of me was now under a foot of water, plenty of time to pack up and get off safely but it's amazing just how quick the water comes in, you can see how folk get caught out if they aren't paying attention...

No idea why the exif seems to have been lost with this one,, Nikon D750, Nikon 16-35 f/4 @34mm, 1S0 100, f/11, 109s.
