The Palos Verdes Peninsula was a sleeper hit location for me when I lived in southern California. I first learned about the place from my college roommate, who used to live there, and later when I moved to LA, I decided to check it out. The two locations that stood out as candidates for photography was the Korean friendship bell and the Point Vicente lighthouse.
I did not have high hopes for the Point Vicente lighthouse as the compositional possibilities are limited due to the location. Plus, its still an active installation, so access inside the lighthouse is limited. There is a park and picnic area right next to the lighthouse allowing you to enjoy the lighthouse in full golden hour glory during sunset. We visited the lighthouse on a fall day but had no luck with the sky, and it was rather grey. I thought that the warm light on the cliffside and the movement in the water, coupled with the rocky beach, were perfect candidates for a long exposure shot. I did not like my composition at the time, so I didn’t bother with editing the image. But recently, as I was reviewing my old shot and thought I would give it a chance at editing with some cropping. I liked the result enough to post it.
It is between Point Loma Lighthouse to the south and Point Conception Lighthouse to the north. The lighthouse was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. The lighthouse is owned by the United States federal government and is managed by the United States Coast Guard. It is not usually open to the public, but the Coast Guard Auxiliary run tours once per month and it is used annually for the city's "Whale of a Day" festival

Another shot from point Vicente lighthouse. Used the big stopper to slow the surf down smoothly. This was one of my favorite lighthouse locations in Los Angeles and one of the locations I think about every time I see a storm pass through Los Angeles.
Thanks again for visiting..

Recently we had an opportunity to return to the Palos Verdes peninsula and see the beautiful Pointe Vicente Lighthouse. I have been waiting for some time so the path of the setting sun with align well with the northern location of the lighthouse. This shot was taken about an hour before the sunset when the golden light bathed the entire cliff and lighthouse in golden light.
My plan was to race back to the southern part of the lighthouse called pelican cove to set up another shot with the light house and the setting sun. more on that later. Hope you all enjoyed this shot, Thanks for visiting..
I got called into work last week at 4 am. After taking care of business I thought I might head over to a favorite spot to see the sunrise. I don't...
Thanks to all Phoide contributors to Point Vicente!
Most notably Sandeep Thomas and Dominic Nessi.
