The Széchenyi Chain Bridge is a suspension bridge that spans the River Danube between Buda and Pest, the western and eastern sides of Budapest, the capital of Hungary. Designed by the English engineer William Tierney Clark and built by the Scottish engineer Adam Clark, it was the first permanent bridge across the Danube in Hungary. It was opened in 1849. The bridge has the name of István Széchenyi, a major supporter of its construction, attached to it, but is most commonly known as the "Chain Bridge". The Budavári Palace is one of the main cultural and tourist centers of Budapest and the former Royal Palace. As part of the Buda Castle District , it has been part of Budapest's World Heritage Sites since 1987. The Gothic royal palace was built in the middle of the 1300s, and its construction lasted until the end of the 1400s, so during the times of Louis the Great, Sigismund and Matthias, the residence of the Hungarian rulers was extended and decorated. From 1541, when the Turks invaded, the palace's condition began to deteriorate and serious damage to both the castle and the buildings of the Castle District had been caused during the siege and recapture of 1686.
