It was at 6 a.m. but it was amazing. I was lucky that our motorhome was in the camping placed aside the waterfall. Flickr: https://flic.kr/p/2h53G45

After my ninth visit to Iceland...
a small waterfall, which often was overlooked. It is just few minutes walk/drive from Skogafoss. Hiker can walk behind the falls.
Kvernufoss South...
In a walking distance, east of the famous waterfall Skógafoss in the Southern Region in Iceland is a beautiful waterfall that few people visit. The name of the waterfall is Kvernufoss, and it is about 40 meters high. Although the waterfall is visible from a narrow-angle from the main road, it is almost hidden in a beautiful gorge.

The Skógafoss in Southern Iceland is massive.
I think has to be one of my favourite locations I've shot, for a couple of reasons, 1. there's hardly anyone there as they all go to the much bigger waterfall nearby. 2. It's stunning and a lot more picturesque than the bigger waterfall nearby. 3. Like Seljalandsfoss (but in my view a lot nicer) you can actually get behind the falls here and shoot outward along the valley towards the sea.
But my god does this place make you work to get an image!!. The water spray in the cave here was just non stop, tried allsorts but to no avail, you are constantly cleaning your lens every few seconds only for it to be completely soaked again, and again.... and again. I lost count of the amount of shots I binned on the day, and also once at home there's absolutely loads completely ruined by water spots, I was convinced I'd managed a couple of water free images so it was just a case of trawling the files and (thankfully) finding some, I think I've finally come away with 3 water free compositions from literally 100's of binned shots, not a place you can turn up to for 20 minutes and expect to get something!!
We hadn't intended to shoot sunset here but the amount of time taken trying to get a shot here meant we wouldn't have time to get anywhere else so we decided to stay here and so glad we did as the light was just phenomenal down the valley lighting up the jagged rocks of the cavern walls and the waterfalls beyond, absolutely beautiful, but an absolute ordeal to shoot, But if you put the time in....
I didn't notice until reviewing the files on the camera but from this angle where the land comes together creating the area of sky looks just like a face / head

Skógafoss is one of the largest and well known falls in Iceland, it's sheer power as it crashes over the sea cliffs has to be seen to be appreciated, if you walk anywhere near toward the bottom of it it's like being in an industrial power shower, and the noise is truly incredible.
The one downside of this place is such is its beauty it's can get very busy, during the day coaches are pulling in all the time with tourists eager to get their selfie sticks out and generally run all over the place like out of control ants. This was the case on this day, I was over here with a few friends and I simply couldn't get the shot I wanted due to rain and the aforementioned ant swarm... they all wanted to go and do a snow mobile tour over the glacier and were getting a bit impatient with my requests to spend a long time at each location which to be honest if you aren't a photographer I totally get! So I told them to leave me here for 5 hours while they went and did that and then come back and find me later....
5 hours may seem a long time but that's 5 hours I've got to get my shots and also to have a good explore of the area well past the top of the falls.
The time went in no time and I got several shots I liked with hardly anyone around (I've included a single 'ant' for scale here), plus some others in locations rarely shot way back along the River Skoga.
I can't believe how long ago this was now, and that I've never posted it up here.

Two portraits shots panorama in autobraking (0Ev; -2Ev; +2Ev) processed as HDR with Darktable. The panorama was processed with Enfuse. Additional improvements by means of plugins like Tone Curve, Highpass filters, Lowpass filters, Channel Mixer, Global Tone Map, and others were managed also with Darktable.
Finally, a personalized Orton effect and few Dodge and Burn retouches were applied.

Skógafoss' Troll In Icelandic mythology, trolls are gigantic evil ugly dim-witted man-eating creatures that live in caves in the mountains. Some are benevolent while others are formidable monsters with a nasty temper that eat people and livestock. Trolls can only travel at night and immediately turn to stone if exposed to sunlight.
