Sogn og Fjordane

This is one of those classic Norwegian views that I really wanted to photograph. Finally, this Summer I had a chance to go there. The reflections weren't quite as perfect as I would have liked, so I might be returning there some time for another go.

Gudvangen

Canoa vikinga en Gudvangen, localidad situada en Naeroyfjord, uno de los brazos del Sognefjord. Ambos son Patrimonio de la Humanidad desde 2005.

There are so many great views in Norway, but this is one of my favorites and I have decided to post this as my 100th photo of Norway. For me this is quintessential Norway, with a fjord, some snow capped mountains in the distance, some forest and farms and a lot of red buildings to add colour to the scene. This is the view you get driving North over Utvikfjellet.

This grand view was taken from the Loen skylift. The cable car opened early Summer of 2017 and offers grandiose views over the Nordfjord lying below. It is quite a ride as the cable car goes almost 1000m straight up without any supports between the bottom and the top ones. The only downside is that the view faces South, and for most of the day you are staring into the sun. Unfortunately the lift's opening hours also force you into the midday light. This was taken late May, right after the earliest departure got me up there just after 09:30. It is a stitch of 3 horizontal photos.

Driving the snow road from Lærdal to Aurland there are various magnificent views over the Aurlandsfjord, which is a side arm of the Sognefjord.

It has been way too long since I posted anything of my favourite country. This was taken almost exactly 3 years ago when Jølstravatn was the calmest I have ever seen it. I still hope I can redo this shot at some point with nicer clouds and weather.

Nigardsbreen, Norway

The Snowroad (Snøveien) runs over the mountains from Laerdal to Aurland, both towns on the shores of the Sognefjord. The quickest way to get from one to the other is the 24 km tunnel, but of course this narrow, mountain road is a much more scenic option. The photo was taken on July 21st and there was still this much snow there.

Driving Southeast along Rd. 5 in Norway, there is this fabulous viewpoint just before entering the Fjaerlandstunnel. It looks back over Lake Jølster.

Aurlandsvangen, Norway

The lovely village of Laerdal, that lies on the shores of the Sognefjord. The old town houses are reflected in the village pond.

A small lake in the centre of this tiny village in Fjord Norway provides this lovely reflection.

A perfect reflection in Lake Oppstryn with clouds that look like they are fanning out from the top of the mountain. Just after taking this picture a very mild breeze picked up and immediately destroyed the reflection.

The Flåm Railway line runs from the little village of Flåm on the Sognefjord, to Myrdal station (866m) on the Hardngervidda. The line is 20 kms long and has a gradient of 5.5% making it the steepest (in parts) railway line in the world (apart from cogwheel lines). When it was built in the 1930s it was meant as a connecting line for locals from the fjords to the recently opened Oslo - Bergen railway. It has since grown out to be one of Norway's top tourist attractions, with over half a million people riding the train annually. The voyage takes you through the scenic, green Flåm valley. There is no road connection to the top part, however, the trail used by the railway builders is now open during summer as a bicycle track and is also very popular. This picture was taken out of the train window in the lower parts of the valley.

It was hardly a sunny day, but the water in Loen Lake reflected a beautiful turquoise colour as a result of glacial melt.

Loen Lake, or Lovatnet, is a lovely turqoise lake near a sidearm of the Jostedal glacier. Neighbouring Oldevatnet is much more frequented because it leads to Briksdal glacier, a tourist hot spot, but this lake keeps a peaceful atmosphere. I think it is one of the most beautiful ones.
