Little Rocks and big Mountains - Walchensee
Little Rocks and big Mountains - Walchensee
by Michael

Ok here's a shot from last saturday evening, taken at the Walchensee. It was a relaxing shoot there at the shores, some beers, good company and nice light.. Quite contrary to the evening before..

So here's the story of a scared photographer running down a steep hill with his camera and tripod held out in front of him. Must have looked quite funny for those who had a chance to be at the Geroldsee on friday night around 10 pm.. especially the part where this photographer had such a huge momentum that he fell on the slippery grass, sliding downslope, still holding the precious camera in front, using his butt to soften the fall. Some might ask why the heck is he running as hell through the darkness and what are those loud grunting and roaring noises in the forest behind him... That's exactly the question the photographer was asking himself while on his sprint back to his car.

So lets start a little earlier around 9pm when he sets up his camera and tries to take some startrails. The Karwendel looks great with the stars above, it's such a nice night for startrail photography, a beautiful clear sky, no wind, all is quiet. He's playing around with ISO and exposure times a bit, takes some test shots and finally settles for a comp. He starts a 32minute exposure, that's what his calculations say. Enough time to do some lightpainting throughout the foreground and eventually lean back and relax...

But what is this, in the forest just 50meters nearby there's some noise... sounds like some deer walking through the brush-wood. He goes to check the time of the exposure... 20 minutes, sitll some time to go.

Those deer seem to come nearer, and it seems to be quite a family... But what if it's no deer. There are no big predators in the german forests that would attack a photographer, or are there? No he doesn't think so!

Suddenly the roaring and grunting begins, quite loud, quite near... what might that be, sounds very much like some wild boar... and what was it somebody told the photographer many years before... a boar wouldn't attack people unless it has little ones with it and feels threatened. All that noises, damn sounds like a whole family. Hope they don't feel threatened by the photographer taking a picture in their backyard ... F***k the exposure, off the photographer goes with tripod and camera in his hands.

A little less than a mile later he's back in his car and completely out of breath... and for the night has enough of startrails photography.

The next morning 5am he's out in the night again walking along the river Isar for a dawn shoot.. after that scary night before it's best to head out into the night again straight away :-)

cheers

Just another quick upload for the weekend. This was also shot at the Walchensee as the last image. This boat made for a nice subject. I used a lee 0.6 hard gnd here for the sky. Processing was mainly contrast, saturation and sharpening.

Have a nice weekend!
