Vila Nova de Gaia

Span
Oporto
by Pete Rowbottom

I haven't uploaded anything for a little while due to being really busy, however I do have some stuff to post coming soon so that will change.

This is a different viewpoint of the splendidly majestic Dom Luís I Bridge, or Luís I Bridge in Porto, it spans the River Douro and links the City of Porto with Vila Nova de Gaia. Although I've been here many times I'd not really got any shots of this that I was happy with and for some reason I'd never shot it at night, so this trip that was high on the agenda.

I spent a good bit of time up here this night watching the metro trams go by over the bridge and did get them with light trails streaking right across but upon getting back I found that I actually preferred the shots without those in.

This is a 3 shot panorama to allow you to see the curvature of the river going off into the distance towards the Atlantic Ocean. Have a zoom in and have a look around.

Capela Do Senhor Da Pedra
Capela do Senhor da Pedra

The Portuguese title translates into - Chapel of the Lord of Stone....

I've wanted to come and shoot this for as long as I can remember ever first seeing it a long time ago, a fascinating little chapel built on a small rocky outcrop jutting out into the Atlantic Ocean.

I was over in Portugal in September but the weather just awful with heavy rainfall, and wasn't even worth coming here, so when I went over again in November this was high on my priority list of places to visit.

My first day here and it looked to be ideal for sunset as it was the only day forecast with any form of cloud, and true to the forecast pretty much the rest of the week turned out cloud free so I chose this day to come and shoot this, also the high tide matched the sunset to within 30 minutes so it was literally perfect.

I'd got here a good few hours before sunset to recce the place and figured it wouldn't exactly be difficult to kill a few hours lying on the beach watching the sun drop with a few beers, which is pretty much what happened, I managed a few shots from the opposite side too with rocks in the sea providing additional interest before moving around to this side for the sunset.

Although I'd packed most of my photography kit for this trip I'd given scant thought to any kind of waterproof footwear, so within about 5 minutes of shooting my useless trainers were absolutely soaked through as the waves broke over my feet, but, once you're wet, you're wet!.....

In the end I managed quite a few shots from here including some shots in the opposite direction to this where the sky was really kicking off in vivid Pinks and Yellows, a great afternoon / evenings shooting and all there was left to do was walk back to the station to catch the train back into Porto, with soaking wet trainers, and a smile.
