Worcestershire

Sunset vs Storm
Poppies, Blackstone Nature Reserve, Bewdley, UK
by Pete Rowbottom

Another image from the Poppy fields that have appeared in Worcestershire this year, contrary to the last one a totally different view and take on the scene.

Shooting in Summer is basically a massive pain in the backside, ridiculous early starts for a sunrise followed by an enourmously long wait for sunset which is inconevient for loads of reasons, one being not getting much sleep... with only one evening here though a chance to shoot sunset was a must, although it wasn't the kind of sunset I was hoping for due to low cloud cover it did provide some dramatic light in the sky and coming together with the thunder storm on the right that had decided to materialise made for quite a moody scene.

This had been the hottest day of the year so far and was a real scorcher, as a result I was now standing under an incoming thunder storm in just a t shirt and shorts, shortly after this the sun dropped away and the light faded giving way to the incoming storm, I packed up and legged it back towards the car, thankfully getting there just before it started.

Cropthorne Mill
Fladbury Mill
by Clive Griffiths

Sometimes being Dad's Taxi has the advantage of taking you somewhere you would not otherwise have been. So it was the other day when one of my brood needed to be dropped off in Pershore, and as there was a bit of colour in the sky I decided to chance my arm in Fladbury. A reminder to always take the camera (and the dog...). Cropthorne Mill is too low to catch the setting sun, but it is a fine spot when the sky colours up behind it. For those wondering why it is called Cropthorne Mill when it is in Fladbury, it is because there are two mills at this point - Fladbury Mill on the west side of the river, and Cropthorne Mill on the east side. Cropthorne Mill is Grade 2 listed.

Chinese Bridge
Chinese Bridge

Hello again, haven't had the space to come on here over the last couple of weeks... I'm looking forward to seeing what you have been up to while I've been away.

Here's another from a particularly fine evening down at Croome Park when the shower clouds were catching the setting sun. The Chinese Bridge is a beautiful piece of craftsmanship, built out of 'green' oak by the Green Oak Carpentry Company and is a replica of the original that was lost beneath the murky waters of the Croome River over 150 years ago.

Another from a day of freezing fog at Croome Landscape Park in Worcestershire. This is the rather nice Chinese Bridge, which was rebuilt a few years ago using 'Green' Oak.

Cathedral
Cathedral
by Clive Griffiths

I got bored walking Monty up and down our lane in the dark so decided to go into town instead for a walk by the river. It's been done before, but here you go, Worcester Cathedral at night. I'm afraid it's going to be a very long time (if ever) when at least part of it isn't covered by scaffolding, but better that than this grand old building falling down. The cathedral is probably best seen across the river Severn, but there are a couple of other angles I want to try.

Afternoon at Broadway Tower
Broadway Tower
by Clive Griffiths

By way of a change from the mountains, here is a shot from a visit to the Cotswolds. This is Broadway Tower under leaden skies. The tower is on one of the highest points in the Cotswold Hills and affords a fine view across the Vale of Evesham, Worcestershire.

I'd completely forgotten about the mills at Fladbury near Evesham unitl I was reminded of them by fellow Flickr folk Mark and Paul.
There are two mills on the River Avon at Fladbury, either end of the weir. This is Cropthorne Mill, which is possibly the more photogenic of the two.

Thanks very much for looking.

Beaming
Eckington Bridge

The rising sun beaming through an arch of Eckington Bridge to light up the mist on the river Avon.

Reflected
Eckington Bridge
by Clive Griffiths

The red sandstone of Eckington Bridge positively glowed in the rays of the setting sun (I've actually toned it down a bit), emphasised by the dark clouds of the approaching storm. The river was so still that the reflections were almost perfect.

Spider!
Diglis Bridge
by Clive Griffiths

It seems many of my Flickr chums have been off to exotic places and have been photographing iconic locations. Down here in rural Worcestershire we have our own collection of interesting places, such as Diglis Bridge which opened in 2010 for foot and bike traffic. It somehow reminds me of a giant spider looming over the walkway.

Island
Worcestershire Beacon
by Clive Griffiths

This shot follows on from the last one (Happy New Year), and this was the sight I was confronted by when I emerged from the fog and the trees, and began climbing hgher onto Worcestershire Beacon. Pinnacle Hill was an island in a sea of fog that stretched for miles and miles in all directions, whilst above the winter sun shone down brightly on those of us who were lucky enough to share the spectacle.

Poppies in the wind
Poppies, Blackstone Nature Reserve, Bewdley, UK
by Pete Rowbottom

A very windy late Summer evening in a huge Worcestershire Poppy field.

This turned out quite well as the cloud which was the precursor for a massive rainstorm had mostly been covering the sunlight, it was just a case of waiting for a possible break and hoping that came before the rain did ...

Luckily I did get the break, the wind had really got up though with the storm coming in so it was a case of just shooting what I had in front of me, I was curious as to how the poppies would look during a slow exposure and was ready to up the ISO to quell any movement, as it happened I liked the result and I think it tells more of a story about the scene so I left the ISO alone and just went with the shot as it was.

Amazngly for me I got this and still made it back to the car about a mile away before the rain came.

A spring sunset at Croome Court
Croome Court

A gorgeous but fleeting Spring sunset lit up the honey coloured stone of Croome Court. The effect was enhanced by the sun picking out the bursting buds of the tree and by catching the bottom of the low shower clouds above.

Sunk
Pirton Pool
by Clive Griffiths

Even though it is 10th April, we are still struggling to shake off winter in these parts so I don't feel so bad about posting another frozen scene. This is another from a very cold and foggy visit to Pirton Pool. I have tried to photograph this little boat a number of times but never really liked the results. On this day the fog isolated it from it's surroundings, and the ice of the lake and that clinging to the tree branches and even to the rushes growing in the sunken boat gave it a little extra.
