Arnarstapi
Gatklettur
by Pete Rowbottom

Following on from the last image and with a similar vibe of surreailty and 'other worldliness'...

This is Arnarstapi on the Snaefellsness peninsula in Iceland, I hadn't been here before and was simply blown away with it, talking of being blown away some of the winds on the trip made it actually impossible to stand up at times and on another day this shot would have been totally impossible as I was peched on quite a narrow area of cliff, thankfully there was hardly any wind this morning, I wouldn't have even gone looking had there been a gust about such is the unpredictability of the weather here you really can end up in big trouble so the utmost respect for the weather is paramount here everywhere you go.

With some nice movement in the clouds this was an unplanned break out of the 10 stop filter during sunrise to give a 472 second exposure, just adding to the whole surreal feel of the place, we stood up here for quite some time shooting and just washing the sea pound in onto the black rocks below, magic.

I have just returned from a photo tour in the Algarve lead by Paulo Silva. Three days of photographing spectacular cliffs and rocks along the beautiful coast, at sunrise and sunset. This was one of my favourite viewpoints. If you are interested in something like this check out Paulo's website: www.paulosilvalandscapephotography.com. He leads tours in various scenic parts of Portugal.

Delicate Arch

Delicate Arch is a 16 m freestanding natural arch located in Arches National Park, near Moab in Grand County, Utah, United States. The arch is the most widely recognized landmark in Arches National Park.

Because of its distinctive shape, the arch was known as "the Chaps" and "the Schoolmarm's Bloomers" by local cowboys.

Without a doubt, it is one of the most photographed arches of this great park and the sunsets are especially crowded by photographers and tourists from all over the world. This is really quite a spectacle of great beauty.

Alabama Hills - Mobius Arch

While I have photographed the Mobius arch at Alabama hills a couple of times over the years, it never occurred to me to look for other arches in the area. For some reason, I assumed the basis of the fame was due to its unique view of the Sierras it provided. But on our last trip, I realized the ease of access made the modius arch such an easily identifiable destination online.

On our last trip, while on the hike to Mobius arch, I came across a location that had a beautiful view of Mt. Whitney. Since I was already late and sunrise was in full swing, I decided to take my images there. I saw the lathe arch while setting up and scanning for any potenetially hidden rattlers. The first thought I had was its size, and it was tiny. To get the shot, I had to get into a very awkward position, but the mountains' view was perfect.

I didn’t think I could set up my tripod here in the limited time I had, so the image was taken handheld with the focal length set to 15mm. At 15mm, everything in the foreground has increased size prominence, which should give you a clue about the size of the arch. I didn’t have high expectations that day of getting an exciting shot due to my tardiness, but the short hike revealed a wonderful surprise.

Being in Monument Valley in early December I was informed the sun doesn't hit Teardrop Arch at that time. I still wanted to see it though. Once there, I realised the next challenge was not being tall enough to peep through the hole, and not having a tripod that goes up so high. So this is a manual shot, with the camera held high above my head, and I'm quite pleased with how it turned out :-)

After Bryce Canyon exploration and our brief stint with the cold we went on to Moab, UT. The gateway town to both Arches and Canyonlands-Island in the sky National Parks. On our first day we decided to tackle the popular destinations and visited one of the most famous geological formations, the Mesa Arch of Canyonlands. There is a pretty short hike to get to the arch which is actually not as huge as I envisioned it but spectacular nonetheless. The only problem is the number of people at location, being one of the most photographed locations in Utah and perhaps southwest itself it's pretty popular even on a cold December morning. Thankfully I am early enough to get a decent spot, I heard some photographer to my left camped out in the location since 4 am for a sunset at 7am.

Anyways we had a nice time talking to fellow photographers about the locations and had a blast sharing tips regarding techniques. I made this pano shot once everyone started to leave after the sun burst through the horizon. This is a four shot panorama of the whole arch, with the early morning sun providing amazing light on the valley below.

Today's picture is another old image from our trip to southern Utah’s beautiful Arches National Park. As a landscape icon, the delicate arch requires no introduction, it's usually featured in all its glory on almost all tourism-related documents created by Utah and even the United States travel brochures. The day we decided to hike up there, we had some beautiful light as the sun went down both on the arch and the snow-capped mountains in the background.

The hike to get to the location is a short but involves following a trail that mostly lays over a large flat rock which is devoid of many markers even in broad daylight. A thing to keep in mind if you plan to return after the sun goes down like we did. We were there in the middle of winter on a moonless night and my plan was to track my hike using the all trails app and then follow the path back to the car. We kept our iPhones charged and were completely confident that we will be able to get back as we stayed to take some beautiful star-filled nightscapes. Regrettably, we failed to account for the thinness obsession phone makers have these days that fails to give the phone batteries any cold protection. As soon as we took our phones out to check the paths, the phone battery went from mid 80% to zero and the phones died and became unresponsive. We were left to trace back our way in complete darkness without any way to identify the hiking trail and while wandering we met a couple of other hikers who were in the same predicament. Fortunately, we found a way to get off the rock soon and was able to get back to the marked trail to the parking lot. We learned a valuable lesson that day regarding preparedness in the desert and how quickly a situation can turn against you.

Revelation
Gatklettur
by Pete Rowbottom

A quite big title to live up to, but to me, this moment here truly was one of those, perched in one spot for about an hour just watching this whole scenario unfold before my eyes really felt very surreal, almost like I wasn't even there.

I've uploaded one before from this morning that was an extremely long exposure, somewhere in the region of about 7 or 8 minutes, I shot that after taking this one, and that time it took for the image to be created just allowed me to stand here take all this in without having to worry about the camera all the time, I could just stand there occasionally checking my watch (and that my ears were still there as they were that cold) and just watch what mother nature had decided to dish up this day, truly a hairs on the back of the neck standing up revelation moment....

Anyway this is a lot shorter exposure to capture the detail in the beautiful tidal rush as it passes through the intricate and snow laden basalt archway.

Brrrrrrrrrr!!!!

Mobius arch at Alabama hills area near Lone Pine, California. I have been to this location multiple times but my attention was always drawn to the larger than life presence of Mt Whitney. Its only quite recently that I was aware of this stunning arch and the view through it. So the last day of our tip to Big Pine while we were coming back we started well before sunrise and hiked through the small hiking path to reach this stunning location.

We had the company of two other photographers and it was fun to realize that we were all from the same neighborhood in LA. We waited for the sun to light up the mountains and then shot this beautiful rock formation. It’s a really easy location to get to and an absolutely must visit if you are ever in the Eastern Sierras.
