Had big plans for this week, with a week off work and 2 or 3 trips planned, starting off with a visit to Loch Lomond and Millarochy Bay and also to climb up Conic Hill for the views across the loch. Unfortunately I seem to have came down with some form of nasty virus and have spent the whole week from the moment I got home until now, in my bed! Thats now 2 visits north and now twice came back with something other than what I bargained for, hope I've not become allergic to the Highlands!
An early morning by the Ashness Jetty as the sun was rising over the mirror smooth lake.
After an overcast day, late afternoon sky started to clear on the west, which resulted in a phenomenal sunset.
USA 2011 - San Francisco

My wife and I lived in the Bay Area for about 6 months immediately after our marriage before finally settling in SoCal. During the six months stay we never ventured or explored any of San Francisco’s beautiful sights. We did Trips to wine country, San Diego, and Yosemite but no trips were made to explore the city where we lived.
We always thought we will be living in the bay area so there was no real urgency in the plans, but we got jobs in LA. So last Thursday was my birthday and we decided to head to San Francisco and give the new D850 some workout. This view is of the San Francisco skyline as seen from the Treasure Island view point. The wind was pummeling us during the shoot and I had to hold down my gitzo traveler lightweight tripod to get a steady shot.

While we were at the fantastic viewpoint in Treasure Island waiting for the blue hour doe the San Francisco skyline shoot, I noticed that the sunset was creating some interesting colors in the sky. The problem was the retreating fog was making everything soft and the fact that the winds were picking up didn’t help the matter one bit. Thankfully, I had packed my Lee Big Stopper and it seemed like a great place to try it. I have noticed from my previous experiences with the big stopper that due to the incredible amount of motion blur it creates in moving objects like water or clouds, it makes the stationary objects look extra sharp. Now I know it’s an optical illusion and not a real increase in sharpness but since perception is the reality I decided to try it out. The wind had picked up and was battering my tripod and I had to hold it down from getting tipped over. After about 4-5 tries, this shot came out tack sharp.
Also, today's quote comes courtesy of Ms. Annie Besant a total badass who was one of the key inspirations behind India’s independence movement and one of the early presidents of Indian National Congress.

To say this was a challenging shot would be to take the efforts behind the creation of this image too lightly. I had this shot in mind since my Google street view stalking showed me this vista. The problem with setting up a shot in San Francisco is the ever-present threat of fog. Especially when shooting an expansive cityscape like this one. Our only choice was to get the shot before summer since some unforeseen family functions forced our hand, there was an impromptu trip to India and thankfully we managed to plan a trip to the Bay Area before April.
From my experience the fog is tricky in spring, so we decided to hope for the best and just roll with it. On the day of the shoot, we did experience some fog but the wind was so strong, I was hoping that it will blow away the coastal fog once the sun sets. Eventually, the wind did just that but what happened was the intensity of the wind just kept on rising and I had to hold down my dainty travel tripod to prevent it from tipping over. Anyways after about 4 or 5 trials, I finally managed to get the panorama stitch that I was satisfied with. This shot was made with about 8 images at 135mm in portrait mode. Hope Y'all like it.

Nice to be back on Flickr after quite a long break! I am back from a business trip to Singapore, but fortunately I had time to meet lots of flickr/facebook friends and shoot some amazing cityscapes.
I will start with this one, shot from the Marina Bay Sands Skypark.
Tripods are not allowed up there, therefore I used a Gorillapod which was very handy indeed, and I was quite nicely surprised with the results.

After a very very very long absence on Flickr, I have decided to start posting again! Hope that there are still people following me here! And I am glad to start with a recent shot from Singapore. It was shot from the Sky Park on top of Marina Bay Sands, during the NPD (National Parade Day) fireworks rehearsal. There are fireworks rehearsal every Saturday, what a great attention for the photographers community! :-) Regarding Flickr, it all started in Singapore 9 years ago when started to post here, and at that time I would have never ever thought that photography would eventually became a full time job!
Milarrochy Bay can be found on the eastern shore of Loch Lomond just north of the village of Balmaha in the Loch Lomond and Trossachs National Park. There are lovely views to be had of Loch Lomond from the shoreline and this lone tree must be the most photographed tree in the area. No matter what, it is a splendid Bay to visit at any time of year.

It seems like ages since I uploaded any black and white images, and just looking it was actually back in November last year, so to break up the colour uploads I thought I'd share this one.
Taken back in February of this year this was a bitterly cold morning on the banks of Loch Lomond, with snow still on the mountains in the distance, not much of an issue if you are are just grabbing a passing shot, much more so though when your image exposure time runs into minutes, which with a heavily overcast day it was always going to as the ND filters were always going to be brought into play, jumping about near to the camera to keep warm wasn't an option for obvious reasons so I had to do it further along the shore, a few people were about walking their dogs, I don't know if they actually noticed the camera set up but needless to say I got a few strange looks..
Motif Number 1, located on Bradley Wharf in the harbor town of Rockport, Massachusetts, is a fishing shack well-known to students of art and art history as "the most often-painted building in America."
Built in the 1840s as Rockport became home to a colony of artists and fishermen, the shack became a favorite subject of painters due to the composition and lighting of its location as well as being a symbol of New England maritime life. Painter Lester Hornby (1882–1956) is believed to be the first to call the shack "Motif Number 1," a reference to its being the favorite subject of the town's painters, and the name achieved general acceptance.
I went here in summer and was thinking of getting the bright red building against the blue sky, unfortunately the fickle New England weather turned on me and impending storm turned the entire sky white. So I decided to have some photoshop fun. Hope you all like it.

It seems to have taken me an age to get around to shooting at this location despite passing it several times going to various places. A very overcast day provided decent conditions for this sort of image and a chance to test out a 15 stop filter than I had yet to use.
I don't know who calculates the exposure times for the filters on the LEE system but I've never had one yet that is anything like the given times on the exposure sheets , this one is no different and I basically don't bother with the sheets and work solely off the histogram as it saves time in the long run despite adding minutes extra on top of the 'guide exposure', this one ending up being nearly 8 minutes long with the guide suggesting around 4 minutes from memory.
This is a really beautiful spot and definitely one I'll come back to again in different conditions, the snow on the tops was still visible and the tree totally bare giving a really stark feel to the image along with the long exposure. This tree must have had a good few batterings up here during Winter but as the title of the image indicates, it remains resolute and defiant. If you do visit the food in the nearby pub at Balmaha is fantastic after a cold morning stood on the shore here..

An early Autumn morning in the English Lake District, when the water on the lakes is still and offers wonderful reflections. The Ashness jetty is on Derwentwater, near the town of Keswick.

This photo was taken from Treasure Island, San Francisco in June last year, rechecked it recently, I felt it is not so satisfy just because if the Bay Bridge get more close to the skyline, the result will be better. So I came back again and walked up toward south to Yerba Buena Island, expected combine both subjects during the blur hour at dusk on 27th September.
After set up my tripod, suddenly I was pushed and fallen down on the sidewalk, then a robber took all the camera gear jumped into a waiting van behind me, and drove away quickly.
A beautiful city we live in, all the different kind artists try to express her glory from each way. Unfortunately, some robbers have destroyed the great dreams with their dirty hands and minds.
The Yaquina Bay Bridge is an arch bridge that spans Yaquina Bay south of Newport, Oregon. It is one of the most recognizable of the U.S. Route 101 bridges designed by Conde McCullough. The Yaquina Bay Bridge is one of eleven major bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway designed by McCullough. It superseded the last ferry crossing on the highway.
Work on the Yaquina Bay Bridge began on August 1, 1934. The main arch was built in toward the center from the anchorages, using tiebacks to support the arch until it could be closed. The piers are supported by timber pilings driven to a depth of about 70 feet (21 m) below sea level. The project received funding from the Public Works Administration.
The bridge uses Art Deco and Art Moderne design motifs as well as forms borrowed from Gothic architecture. The Gothic influence is seen in the balustrade, which features small pointed arches, and in the arches of the side span piers. The ends of the bridge are augmented by pedestrian plazas that afford a view of the bridge and provide access to the parks at the landings by stairways. Pedestals were provided for proposed sculptures of seals, but the statues were never executed.
