One more shot from Pfeiffer State Beach. Took this one as I reached the beach when I got about 2 minutes to shoot the bridge head on without anyone walking through the frame. I like this shot a little better than the one where the sun is setting through the arch.

Vik Sea Stacks at Sunset.

This day was had been an absolute washout, sheet rain all day, and thick cloud, not a hope of shooting anything, at sunset it was still horrible but we walked out to the beach at Vik to try and get some dramatic weather shots of the waves around the sea stacks, after 30 mins I'd given up as the winds were whipping up all the sand and I ended curled up in a ball on the beach it was that bad, pebbles bouncing off my knuckles while holding my hood down!! errr balls to this!!

With the weather from hell seemingly never ending we retreated back inland to shoot the church up high, no sooner had we left the beach this scene just broke out of absolutely nothing! had to leg it up the hill and set up really quickly with the long lens to grab this unfolding dramatic sunset, weirdly it was the best one we had all week, you can't turn your back on anything in this Country for 5 minutes, if you do you will miss something. After this had died off the grey drabness came back again before breaking once more into a huge afterburn of purple and red (pics to follow)

Early morning after a high tide the beach was cleaned of footprints and small sand ripples were there instead. I positioned my camera very low to emphasize the ripples and made a long exposure to smooth out the sky. Some focus stacking was need as well, since the foreground was very close to the camera. I opted for B/W, since the sky color was rather dull.

Another shot from the spectacular sunset we experienced at the second beach in the Olympic Peninsula. The main challenge of taking shots here is the incredible change in lighting that happens in a very short while during sunset.

This shot was taken just before sunset when the sun was creating an extremely high dynamic range scene. About 5 minutes after I took this shot, the sun went down and we had beautiful pastel low dynamic range scene that I posted before. This one required about two graduated filters to balance out the high tones with the low tones. I also tried to get a Sunstar through the natural arch in the rock but got a sun portal instead. Hope you all like this image.

This turned-to-stone troll Kerling is the most photogenic rock on this beach. Other rocks and waves provide interesting foreground for photography. Be careful though, waves can be very dangerous here, which is actually the case for many places on Iceland.

Photo tips: You'll need rather wider lens here. I think that a moody weather with some waves really suits this place, but nice sunrise, or probably even better sunset, would also be great times for photography here.

Getting there: It's just a short and easy walk from Djúpalónssandur Parking, which is easily accessible from the main road (574) circling the westernmost part of the Snæfellsnes peninsula.

A long exposure shot of the Burj Al Arab at the blue hour was still missing on my stream, so here it is! I had to 'sneak' into the private beach of another famous hotel nearby to take this shot ;-)

The Coquille River Lighthouse near Bandon, Oregon was built to mark the entrance to the Coquille River and to help mariners get past the ever-shifting sand bars. The light would also serve as a coast light for vessels heading up and down the Pacific Ocean.

Prior to 1850, the area around the Coquille River was primarily settled by the Coquille Indians. In 1851, gold was discovered at the nearby Whiskey Run Beach, but its discovery didn't have the same effect as the gold rush in California.

The first permanent settlers arrived in the area in 1853, no doubt attracted by gold, lumber, and fishing. By 1859, a small port was established on the Coquille River to allow access to all inland produce and resources. The town of Averille was established in 1873 by George Bennett and his sons, but was changed to Bandon a year later, named for Bandon, Ireland, which the Bennett Family hailed from.

It was super windy at the black sand beach in Vik when I shot this image. The sand hitting my face was tough to deal with. It was a very cloudy day with some drizzle. There was no color at the scene and so ended up converting this image to B&W.

This is one of my favorite photography quotes, one I found solace in when I took up photography. As a new photographer I initially thought there were rules that you follow that will help you get better shots. But as I went through awesome shots by great photographers one after another, I realized they never had any explicit rules which they followed, instead they adjusted depending on the situation. A fellow photographer I met while travelling gave me one of the best advices, he told me to just to keep the camera in the bag while you reach a new location and to just walk around explore as you will always fine something interesting.

This shot is a direct result of taking that advice, this lighthouse was a hard location to shoot and I only found this view while we were about to leave. I managed to get about two three good shot just by taking my time and really enjoying the place rather than darting around like a blue arsed fly with a camera.

• The Kohala Volcano last erupted about 120.000 years ago and is the oldest of 5 volcanoes that make up the Big Island.

Between 250.000 and 300.000 years ago the Kohala volcano experienced a truly massive landslide in which a part of the volcano fell into the ocean.

This landslide is responsible for the now famous sea cliffs on the windward Kohala shoreline but also triggered a giant tsunami that left marine deposits multiple 100 ft high on the other islands. Remnants from this landslide can still be found under water 81 miles (130 km) from the current coastline.

I’ve heard stories about weather in Chicago, and today I was able to experience so many extremes weather wise that I had to stay outside the entire day and shoot more than 10 hours, on several different locations. I was deliberating on going back to this location tonight because of the storm that was brewing. Boy, I’m glad I did! In just under two hours I was able to witness the crazy thunderstorms , double rainbow and the sunset that was beyond anything I saw before. I hope I was able to manage to capture everything and I can’t wait to show it to you. For the beginning, this is a lucky shot of the lightning that was an opening for this crazy evening. What do you think?

Jokulsarlon, Iceland

The beach of Jokulsarlon in Iceland is really unique. I´ve been to many glaciers worldwide, in Patagonia, Alaska, New Zealand but I´ve never seen something like what we can see here in the beach of Jokulsarlon were the ice blocks broken from the glacier navigate to the open sea and are finally deposited by the waves on the sand of the beach were rest for hours or days until finally dissolve.

The colors of the ice, sometimes blue such as this one, and the magic forms that appear with the interaction with the waves makes it easy to spend hours here taking photos or even just seen the blocks and listening to the waves.

Another shot of the beach of Jokulsarlon just after sunset. This beach is famous by the ice blocks that come from the glacier and rely on the sand for days.

After visiting Cape Blanco lighthouse we drove all day and reached Coquille River light at Bullard’s Beach State Park by sunset time. I was particularly interested in the stubby design of the building and to see how that aided its functioning as an effective lighthouse. Unlike many of the lighthouses I have see this one is located on a sandy beach apparently to warn ships about the dangerous shifting sandbars into the Coquille River and harbor at Bandon. This lighthouse was originally named Bandon Light and was first lit on Feb 29, 1896.

This was a particularly challenging shot for me as there are not many locations to shoot it from without looking like the thousands of shots which have already been taken. I saw this view while walking back away from the lighthouse to the beach. The tall grass provided excellent foreground interest and the glorious sunlight was falling on the lighthouse from behind.
