Pre dawn at Ullswater, a bit a a break from the Icelandic images, ironically this was a heck of a lot colder than Iceland was!
Last week Myself, Geoff Moore, Mark Waidson, and Mike (Muddyboots) headed off to the Isle of Skye for a few days in what turned out to be a fantastic trip where the weather somehow played ball for us everyday.
On the way up we decided to stop off here for a sunrise shoot, it had been several years since I shot this location and I've never had conditions like this here, it had been down to minus 10 on the way up over Shap and this made for some great ice and frost around the lake giving some different foreground options.
This one was shot pre sunrise, we got some great light when the sun came up over the hills too but I really like the cold, still feeling to this image.

Dawn breaks at the North end of Ullswater over the boathouse situated near to Pooley Bridge, a lot shorter expsoure than the last shot at just 23 seconds, the light having increased considerably now, a lovely still morning unfolds over the misty Lake.

Morning sun hits the hill and the Duke of Portland boathouse on Ullswater Lake in the English Lake District. It is perhaps the most photographed building in the area and nowadays it is a vacation cottage you can rent.
Pooley Bridge,
A beautiful early morning scene on Brothers Water, the sun had just begun to come over the fell tops and fall down onto the area, there was a load of low lying moving mist this morning and the sun has just started to hit it and the rocks on the shoreline, causing the mist to rise upwards even more.
Myself and Mike (Muddy Boots) - www.flickr.com/photos/muddybootsuk had decided to come here after shooting sunrise on Ullswater and I'm really pleased that we did as the light that followed was just superb, allowing to get 3-4 shots I'm pleased with from one location which is really rare to say the least, this one was a bit of a nightmare exposure wise with the sunlit mist very easy to blow out against the dark backdrop of the fells to the rear.
Something I honestly never knew until recently, 'Brothers Water' used to be called 'Broad Water', but the name was changed after 2 brothers drowned in it in the 19th Century..
Mike's done a Youtube video of the trip which actually includes this bit - you can it see here, give it a watch it's really good. - www.youtube.com/watch?v=BVZ389TxrTM&feature=youtu.be

Is it just me or has Explore gone down the pan............? And I should have spent more time listening to Rocket from the Crypt.
A fair few visits now to this location and always failed to get the rainbow, I wasn't that hopeful today with it being Winter and the Sun not getting that high in the sky and it was cloudy in parts, but it would be rude not to try while I was passing by anyway.
As it happens the cloud lifted and it appeared for me for once, only problem now was actually shooting it as the rain had been quite heavy of late and the falls were quite powerful, which also meant the dreaded spray was out in force, anyone who's ever shot here when the falls are in full flow will know that it's nigh on impossible to shoot from the bottom due to the amount of spray in the air as it's nowhere to escape to and just circles around the bottom section, great if you fancy a free shower, useless for photography..
For that reason I chose to shoot it from above and go in a bit tighter, still getting the pool in the shot but not a lens full of water in the process.
I did have a go down below after this and think I may have got 1 or 2 usuable images but I was literally soaked withf the spray within ten minutes and was putting a plastic bag over the camera inbetween shots, must have scrapped about 10 shots or so due to water spots.
It's a beautiful, but challenging spot to shoot in, thankfully the shot I'd wanted for a while now is in the bag, just need snow and a rainbow now . . .
Following on from the last image, this was a very impromptu trip out, and it has to be said probably the single most fruitful photography trip I have ever had in such a small amount of time.
While we were here shooting the mist on Brothers Water I kept looking back urther along the Lake, tried various things but there wasn't really any sort of composition I was happy with but I knew there was an image to be had somewhere, as I remarked to Mike at the time. As the sun rose higher and was hitting the mountain tops it started cascading further down from the perfect angle, and for a few moments it lit the entire of the shoreline here illuminating all the reeds and trees while the mountains to the rear were still in shadow and the whole matching contasting scene was reflected perfectly into the still lake....
A quick run up the shoreline ensued and I knew exactly what I wanted to shoot, big lens on and zoomed into the far end of it, it turned out to be a 10 shot vertical panorama of the scene.
Shortly afterwards the scene had changed entirely and the moment was gone, always pays to keep looking around.
Mike's done a Vlog of the trip which you can see here, give it a watch it's really good. -
Ullwater, just after sunrise, a perfectly calm morning and load of low lying mist, magic.
I'd spotted this boat earlier this morning on the way to photograph sunrise further up the lake, I could only hope that the low mist would still be around by the time I got back here, as it happens it was as although the sun had risen it had yet to clear the top of the mountainsides here.
Myself and Mike (Muddyboots) - www.flickr.com/photos/muddybootsuk spent a short while here shooting, this one being my favourite from here.
You can imagine just how peaceful the scene was here, you could literally hear a pin drop, the odd bird making a noise but literally complete silence, that was until there was a strange screeching sound further down the lakes followed by what sounded like an enourmous explosion, almost jumped out of my skin!! we both looked at each other to say what on earth was that!! no sign of anything at all, the noise stopped and that was that....
about 20 minutes later we were driving towards Brothers Water and we came to Glenridding village, on the outskirts was a completely smashed to bits car wrapped around the metal fencing on a bend with a guy stood on the roadside with somebody else with him, that will be that then!!
We later learned (from the guy that was with him) that he said he had 'swerved to avoid something', I had a 'bit' (lot) of doubt about this bearing in mind the noise we heard, it was a 30mph road, and the absolute state of his car told another story...
Guess he won't be doing that again in a hurry !
