Millennium Walk
St. Paul's behind Millenium Bridge
by Michael

During my trip to London I went for a walk to Millennium bridge at one morning. I got up very early to shoot some blue hour. This photo here was the last one I took that morning. Using a self-timer I walked into the frame to make it a bit more interesting.

Tower Bridge & City Hall
London Riverside
by Alan Taylor

City Hall is the headquarters of the Greater London Authority (GLA), which comprises the Mayor of London and the London Assembly. It is located in Southwark, on the south bank of the River Thames near Tower Bridge. It was designed by Norman Foster and opened in July 2002, two years after the Greater London Authority was created. Wikipedia

Millennium Bridge, London
Millennium Bridge and St. Paul's from West
by Alan Taylor

The Millennium Bridge, officially known as the London Millennium Footbridge, is a steel suspension bridge for pedestrians crossing the River Thames in London, England, linking Bankside with the City of London. It is located between Southwark Bridge and Blackfriars Railway Bridge. It is owned and maintained by Bridge House Estates, a charitable trust overseen by the City of London Corporation. Construction began in 1998, and it initially opened in June 2000.

Canary Wharf Underground, England
Canary Wharf Station
by Adelheid Smitt

Something very different this time. I like modern architecture, especially when it comes to symmetry and geometric lines. This is one of the exits of the Canary Wharf underground station. Most people seem to prefer photographing the other one, but I liked this one as it has more escalators. It is one of London's busiest stations, but not so on Easter Sunday afternoon. Unfortunately tripods are not allowed here, so this needs to be done with a steady hand and higher ISO. But I personally like the result and posting something different to my usual images.

Symmetricality
Canary Wharf footbridge
by Pete Rowbottom

Is there such a word?, if not, then there should be.... This place was built for the Crossrail project and resembling a scene from Star Wars or some Sci-Fi movie this new addition to Canary Wharf makes quite a striking feature and seemingly made for black and white photography.

Big Ben
Framed Big Ben
by Michael

Soon after taking the photo I showed here yesterday I had to run for cover. The dramatic light turned into a short but heavy downpour. The next dry place was right under the Westminster bridge in this passage underground. As I turned around after the short spring and saw this view I didn't hesitate to take another couple of photos. If it wasn't for the rain I might never have gone down there and found this gem of a perspective.

What lies beneath . . . .
Framed Big Ben
by Pete Rowbottom

Last time I was here I had no wide angle or tripod, so decided to come back when I was better equipped, it also should double as a great little place to shelter from the rain, apart from the fact that the brick lined roof let loads of water in so infact I wasn't much better off, except out of the wind... I liked the old paving stones and brickwork down here leading into the well known scene in front. 93 seconds @ f11.

Last monday I was in photographers heaven for a few minutes. London before sunset with a storm front rolling in from the east presented the best photo opportunity in this year so far and I was in exactly the right place.

I have an Article on my blog where I provide some behind the scenes info to how this photo came to be, if you are interested.

Westminster Storm
Westminster Bridge to Big Ben
by Michael

As an interlude between all the New Zealand Photos I want to show another photo from that incredible evening in London back in August. To see such awesome light at such a great location was really something special. I felt very lucky :-)

Processing on this one was my usual Exposure Blending, then some dreamy photo techniques and to finish it some contrast and color work. I explain all of this in my video tutorials, which I've recorded over the last years.

cheers

Silence
Westminster Bridge to Big Ben
by Pete Rowbottom

I was really lucky to get anything here today as it was pouring down and I got a royal soaking before I got here, I decided to visit a spot undercover right next to here to try and wait it out, with a few mins amazingly it did stop and allowed to to not only get a nice long exposure with the low light but also manage to get all the storm clouds, with 30 minutes it had completely cleared and was sunny for the rest of the day, well worth a soaking, to think I almost gave up for the day.... Also pleased with the colour version, but I'm really feeling the black and white vibe at the moment, especially for stuff like this, just feels a lot more emotive to me when you remove the distraction of colour.

In the Museum

Imposing architecture in the Natural History Museum London. Indeed it was not as empty as it seems on this picture. I spent some time on it in postproduction to get rid of a guy on the stairs and a green sign in the very middle, showing the way to an emergency exit. But cleaned up this way it looks much better.

Going up
Canary Wharf Station
by Pete Rowbottom

Canary Wharf, one of the largest business places in the world, banking, million pound / dollar transactions, high fliers, and all I'm interested in is images of the architechture.... I think I know what side of the fence I'd rather be on.. anyway, a second attempt at this location, after my wide angle failed last time with a loose mounting plate screw (how???) I didn't spot until later in the day causing autofocus failure and light leaks, once the issue was found it was sorted with a simple matter of an opticians screwdriver (which now stays in my camera bag permanently), So, a different day and a functioning lens...needed to return to get what I'd wanted in the first place, Canary Wharf is a funny old place, not somewhere I'd usually rate as a destination but I do like it for shooting and I've a bit of a London thing going on at the moment, amidst the seemingly never ending concrete constructions of London there is still beauty to be found, challenging lighting issues and the incessant passengers make it all the more fun to try and grab something here, handheld, no tripod, no HDR. Can concrete be beautiful...? Interspersed with a bit of shiny metal.... Maybe.

Light & Lines
Victoria and Albert Museum
by Pete Rowbottom

It's absolutely ages since I've done any meaningful architechtural shots as I've been so busy it's easy to overlook my other favourite genre.

A day off last week saw me head down to London for a full days shooting, the weather had looked to be poor but the beauty of shooting in London is it really doesn't matter as you just switch to indoor locations, and there are so many you could have a week and still not get round them all.

I've come away from this day with a few images I'm really happy with, some from new locations, some I've shot in the past, this being one of my favourites, the light in here is gorgeous during the day but can pose a bit of a challenge with the dynamic range in the scene. I took the D750 for this shoot as the rear flip out screen is an absolute godsend for this type of photography, and allows you to frame up subjects from really unusual angles without having to lie on the floor and get covered in someone eklses chewing gum... something you only do once !

Great place to be for sunset is the top level of Tate Modern Gallery. You get an inspiring 360ᵒ view of the London skyline, from high above the River Thames. More spectacular buildings on the other side but colors on this. The best, it's for free.

The continuation of my London series. Here's another famous perspective of Westminster and the Houses of Parliament. I went for a long time exposure to give this photo something special.

I also wrote a few new articles on my blog about tripod and filters I use for example.

5 exposures at -1.3EV, -0.7EV, 0EV, +0.7EV and +1.3EV tonemapped using Photomatix Pro then edited using DxO Photolab. The Natural History Museum in London is a natural history museum that exhibits a vast range of specimens from various segments of natural history. The museum is home to life and earth science specimens comprising some 80 million items within five main collections: botany, entomology, mineralogy, palaeontology and zoology. The museum is a centre of research specialising in taxonomy, identification and conservation. Given the age of the institution, many of the collections have great historical as well as scientific value, such as specimens collected by Charles Darwin. The museum is particularly famous for its exhibition of dinosaur skeletons and ornate architecture—sometimes dubbed a cathedral of nature—both exemplified by the large Diplodocus cast that dominated the vaulted central hall before it was replaced in 2017 with the skeleton of a blue whale hanging from the ceiling.
