I was about to post up some stuff from Skye, as is always the way your latest trip seems to eclipse the last one as it is fresh in the memory and certain things get lost for a while. An email regarding this image jogged my memory as I wanted to post this on here, this was another shot just before a sea storm at St Monans in Fife, the irregular shaped breakwater standing up to absolutely everything that is thrown at it by nature, hence the title.
B/W to my mind is perfectly suited to this sort of stuff to accentuate shape and is normally something I'd go for here but the colours were appealing at the time of shooting this so this (sadly) became a bit of an afterthought, however the more I look at it I think I prefer this one for many different reasons, the stormy skies being absolutely ideal for this type of shot.
Took a trip to St. Monans and Elie yesterday for another go at the Breakwater.

El actual Pont del Petroli se inauguró en 1965 y fue abandonado en 1990. El muelle se convirtió, a partir de entonces, en una apreciada zona de submarinismo gracias al rico ecosistema submarino que se creó entre sus pilares. Sepias, algas, medusas, rayas y hasta caballitos de mar encontraron allí un lugar ideal en el que vivir.
En 2001, la empresa propietaria solicitó los permisos para derribar el puente y fue entonces cuando un colectivo de submarinistas y fotógrafos encabezados por el pastelero Josep Valls se movilizaron para conservarlo. Finalmente, el Ayuntamiento compró el puente en 2003 y, tras varia fases de restauración, lo abrió al público el 13 de junio de 2009.
En pocos años esta pasarela se ha convertido en un símbolo de la ciudad, apreciada tanto por los badaloneses como por los curiosos turistas que lo fotografían hasta la saciedad. Además de buscar la clásica postal de atardecer en el mar, se ha convertido en una tradición hacerse una foto con el mono de bronce que hay al inicio de la pasarela. Esta escultura, de más de 200kg, fue un regalo que la vecina fábrica de Anís del Mono ofreció a la ciudad en 2012.
Aunque hay puentes muy parecidos en Estados Unidos o Gran Bretaña, este es el único de su género que se conserva en nuestras costas. Y todo gracias a que el bueno de Josep Valls, cuya lucha se reconoce en una placa a la entrada de la pasarela, nunca tiró la toalla. La técnica. Un solo archivo RAW revelado con Aurora HDR y Photosop. Tripode y filtro Polarizador y ND 1000 Exposición de 60 segundos.
The impressive stone bridge leading to the Ponta do Sol pier is a beautiful sight itself, but if you add crushing waves below and some nice light, it's an amazing sight.
Photo tips: To nicely frame the whole thing, you'll need really ultra-wide lens. I could go down to 10mm (15mm full-frame) and wished I had even wider lens with me. Sunset brings nice side-light, but I can imagine great Sunrise compositions as well.
Getting there: You can easily park nearby right next to the beach (well, it can be pretty crowded in the top season). It's just ~100 meters walk then.

The very impressive but sadly now abandoned 2241 foot pier was built for the Isle of Man Harbour Board, It opened on 22nd July 1886.

It seems a good while since I've done anything meaningful in Scotland, the first location in Aberdour was a total washout with the rain appearing from nowhere, in fact in 4 days in Fife I must have seen about 7 or 8 unpredictable sea storms just come rolling in. This was early evening and another is making it's way towards the East Neuk of Fife so I had to really rush to get here and set up before it hit, in the end I managed about 20 minutes of shooting here before yet again the entire area went black and the rains came, this would be the only day where I could do this location due to the weather and tides combining so I was made up to come away with some images of it at last, this time the storms working in my favour instead of against me.
Anyone who's shot this location will know how tricky it is balancing yourself and all your stuff on the narrow wall in the wind, with a concrete floor behind you and the sea in front it isn't somewhere you want to be falling off....

This image is somewhat of a bonus for me as the visit here was a total washout, literally, I've posted another image from here a few days later earlier on my stream as I thought it was the only one I had managed to get, the weather was dry but the tide was out... This image is pretty much what I was after originally, this day it absolutely poured down and I ended up waiting in the rain with the camera covered with a waterproof backpack cover, just hoping for a break in the rain, getting soaked in the process... when I had checked my files I hadn't managed to get anything not ruined by the rain, such is life... Oddly though when checking the images from that trip day a few files had somehow been mixed up and put right to the end of the folder out of sequence, this being one of them, not a clue why or how but I was made up to find this long exposure image with no rain spots and a lot of nice dark cloud movement during the bad weather, a bit of a phoenix from the ashes....
This is the remains of Hawkcraig Pier, Aberdour, Fife, looking out towards Inchcolm Island and behind that the Lothian coastine towards Edinburgh, after such a frustrating day weather wise I'm made up to have actually got something from it, even more so as I didn't think I had originally.

Sunrise in Moll del Petroli (Petrolium dock), Badalona.
Simple shot in Manual mode with 416 seconds (7 minutes) of exposition. This is my first shot taken and published with a filter. In fact, it was a double filter (Haida ND3.0 {100 steps} and Haida ND1.8 {6 steps}).
After, It was processed with Darktable creating the basic canvas for AdobeRGB with the Logarithmic option for Unbreak input profile. Then, additional plugins like Tone Curve, Highpass filters (only rocks), Local contrast (only rocks), Lowpass filters, Haze removal, some denoise plugins, and others were applied.
In this edition, the exposition was a little bit increased, colors were not modified but saturation and vividness were increased.

Built between 1932 and 1958, St Columba’s Cathedral is the principal church of the Roman Catholic Diocese of Argyll and the Isles. It was built in a neo-Gothic style of highly distinctive pink Peterhead and blue Inverawe granite. The Bell Tower soars above the cathedral which is located on the sea front at the northern end of Oban creating a distinctive landmark for vessels arriving or departing from the Port.
A bit of a change to the previous London based images, Steetley pier, an abandoned structure just outside of Hartlepool on the Durham Coast, the area all around here was very heavily industrialised but now is being reclaimed by nature once again, the pier is actually in 2 sections now (more pics to come) and is not accessible anymore, it just stands as a reminder of the past.
The beach here is enormous and hardly a soul on it today, the tide seen on its way out here hence the image name, I had a good hour or 2 shooting here, and definitely a location I'll go back to at different times of the day and with different tidal conditions, got quite a few images I was happy with from the visit, this being the first. I do like presenting this kind of stuff in black and white a lot, this one just stands out far more in colour.

Steetley Pier.
Another shot from Steetley beach on the Durham Coast just outside of Hartlepool, about as minimalistic a shot as I've ever taken, shooting well over to lose most things in the scene apart from the horizon and the subject.

Another from Fife, with surprise surprise yet another July sea storm brewing over the East Lothian area and heading toward the Fife Coast. A different take on it from the last one, with the long length of the jetty here I wanted to try a portrait format shot as well as it looked really good in camera, bit longer of an exposure with a 3 stop grad used for the sky, by the time I'd taken this and packed up for the climb down the ladder the rain was just starting to arrive, so a result, and a quick run back to the car on the harbour.... Berwick Law can be seem to the rear.
I'd thought about a black and white version for this but with the contrasty storm light the colours were pretty punchy so seems a waste to lose that for this one.

We really had fine weather while in San Francisco back in may. A little bit too good maybe. No deep fog rolling in at the Golden Gate bridge so I looked for other things to shoot. Here's a view from Pier 7. I was fine tuning the compostiion for nearly half an hour till I found the right spot and everything aligned perfectly.
