Reynisdrangar is a stunning rock formation located in the Southern Region of Iceland. These towering basalt sea stacks rise up from the ocean, creating a dramatic and awe-inspiring sight. Reynisdrangar is a popular destination for photographers, as the unique landscape offers a variety of opportunities for capturing stunning images. The black sand beach surrounding the rock formations provides a stark contrast to the bright blue ocean, making for a striking composition. Additionally, the nearby cliffs and caves offer unique perspectives and angles for photographers to explore.
Reynisfjall is a 340 m high tuff mountain arising out of a volcanic eruption from under a glacier in the penultimate Ice Age, near the village of Vik. Alternating in an irregular manner are layers of tuff, pillow lava and columnar basalt veins and loops. Reynisdrangar stacks are a collection of 66 m high rock pillars that rise out of the sea and are of the same geological formation as Reynisfjall. On Reynisfjöru beach, very beautiful basalt formations in the south part of the mountain can be seen, and there you will find an exceedingly beautiful cave called Hálsanefshellir.

Dramatic view of Reynisdrangar rocks from Reynisfjara Beach taken between a net of water streams. It is amazing how Black and White allows to be really creative and get intense and powerful atmospheres.

Iceland is known for its stunning landscapes, with glaciers, waterfalls, and hot springs among the many natural wonders that draw visitors from all over the world. But one of Iceland's most intriguing sights is Reynisdrangar, a group of basalt sea stacks rising from the waves just off the coast near the town of Vik. These mysterious formations are steeped in local legend and make for some of the most dramatic photography locations in Iceland.

Vik Sea Stacks at Sunset.
This day was had been an absolute washout, sheet rain all day, and thick cloud, not a hope of shooting anything, at sunset it was still horrible but we walked out to the beach at Vik to try and get some dramatic weather shots of the waves around the sea stacks, after 30 mins I'd given up as the winds were whipping up all the sand and I ended curled up in a ball on the beach it was that bad, pebbles bouncing off my knuckles while holding my hood down!! errr balls to this!!
With the weather from hell seemingly never ending we retreated back inland to shoot the church up high, no sooner had we left the beach this scene just broke out of absolutely nothing! had to leg it up the hill and set up really quickly with the long lens to grab this unfolding dramatic sunset, weirdly it was the best one we had all week, you can't turn your back on anything in this Country for 5 minutes, if you do you will miss something. After this had died off the grey drabness came back again before breaking once more into a huge afterburn of purple and red (pics to follow)
Check out the 5 people stood watching it on the beach adding scale

The black sand beach can be very dangerous !
Vik: Reynisdrangar Seastacks.
As lava cools over an extended period of time, it creates incredible columns of hexagonal basalt rock that often form cliffs. Iceland has a bunch of these basalt columns along its southern shore. This was shot just outside the village of Vik. The wave ended up hitting me just below my chest and I had to wipe off the sea spray and dry my camera after this shot!!!
It was super windy at the black sand beach in Vik when I shot this image. The sand hitting my face was tough to deal with. It was a very cloudy day with some drizzle. There was no color at the scene and so ended up converting this image to B&W.
