Skógafoss

Skógafoss is one of the most iconic waterfalls in Iceland, located on the Skógá River in the southern part of the country. It is a popular tourist destination and a favorite spot for photographers due to its stunning beauty and accessibility. The waterfall is 60 meters high and 25 meters wide, and its powerful flow creates a mist that often produces rainbows on sunny days. The surrounding landscape is equally breathtaking, with lush green hills and a rugged coastline. There are several photography locations around Skógafoss, including a viewpoint at the top of the waterfall, a hiking trail that leads to a hidden waterfall, and a nearby black sand beach.

I think Iceland has to be the single best place I've been to ever for waterfalls, you can't go far without encountering them, small, huge, dramatic, unusual, and simply jaw dropping waterfalls all over the place, such is the way that the well known bigger impressive ones get totally mobbed at times and it can be really hard work being patient to get the shot you want, the area close to here is one such place, Skogafoss, however this isn't the main falls, it's a good way over the top of the main falls and further along the river, although I had really poor weather, and rain there wasn't a soul around so I could set up and just wait it out for any dry spells without hoards of tourists.

As it happens the dry spells never came, and in several hours alone along this area I just had to shoot and wipe the lens and hope for the best with the slowest shutter speed I could manage without getting the front element wet, I hate the rain but the dark dramatic skies beat a blue sky here and add to the image I think.

Even in the rain it was a great place to just wander around and take in the beauty of the place, and of course the rain although making some very slippery surfaces, really helped with the raucous nature of the water flow at my chosen spot and gave nice contrast to the red rocks,

The Fimmvörðuháls Hiking Trail is a hiking between two glaciers and a volcano. It is one of the most beautiful hiking trails in the country and a great destination for people into photography.

The Fimmvörðuháls (five-cairn trail) route is about 25km long including 1000m of climbing. It is the area between the Eyjafjallajökull and Mýrdalsjökull glaciers in the south of Iceland.

The starting point is normally by the fabulous and famous waterfall Skógafoss, and ends in the beautiful green valley Thorsmork.

The Skógafoss is one of the biggest Icelandic waterfalls with a width of 15 meters and a drop of 60 meters. Due to the amount of spray the waterfall consistently produces, a single or double rainbow is normally visible on sunny days.

Power
Skógafoss
by Pete Rowbottom

Skógafoss is one of the largest and well known falls in Iceland, it's sheer power as it crashes over the sea cliffs has to be seen to be appreciated, if you walk anywhere near toward the bottom of it it's like being in an industrial power shower, and the noise is truly incredible.

The one downside of this place is such is its beauty it's can get very busy, during the day coaches are pulling in all the time with tourists eager to get their selfie sticks out and generally run all over the place like out of control ants. This was the case on this day, I was over here with a few friends and I simply couldn't get the shot I wanted due to rain and the aforementioned ant swarm... they all wanted to go and do a snow mobile tour over the glacier and were getting a bit impatient with my requests to spend a long time at each location which to be honest if you aren't a photographer I totally get! So I told them to leave me here for 5 hours while they went and did that and then come back and find me later....

5 hours may seem a long time but that's 5 hours I've got to get my shots and also to have a good explore of the area well past the top of the falls.

The time went in no time and I got several shots I liked with hardly anyone around (I've included a single 'ant' for scale here), plus some others in locations rarely shot way back along the River Skoga.

I can't believe how long ago this was now, and that I've never posted it up here.

Additional improvements by means of plugins like Tone Curve, Highpass filters, Lowpass filters, Channel Mixer, Global Tone Map, and others were managed also with Darktable.

Finally, a personalized Orton effect and few Dodge and Burn retouches were applied.

Skógafoss' Troll In Icelandic mythology, trolls are gigantic evil ugly dim-witted man-eating creatures that live in caves in the mountains. Some are benevolent while others are formidable monsters with a nasty temper that eat people and livestock. Trolls can only travel at night and immediately turn to stone if exposed to sunlight.
