After a week of hardly any Sun I got lucky this afternoon, as it was beautiful weather, quite a rare sight on Skye. ;-) No wind and a lot of sun. Towards the sunset though, the sun got behind clouds and the light got boring. Fortunately, a few minutes before sunset, there was a small hole in the clouds and the cliffs became red for a minute or two. And, that was it, no more colors after that.

I think the best time to visit Yosemite is February. There is still some snow around the valley. The trees and the snow shine mystically because of the sun rays through the patchy clouds. Certainly a sight to behold.

The Glenfinnan Monument sitting at the head of Loch Shiel. In 1815, the Jacobite cause was no longer a political threat. Alexander Macdonald of Glenaladale, a minor branch of the Clan Donald, built a memorial tower at Glenfinnan to commemorate the raising of the standard of the Young Pretender. The tower, which is surmounted by a statue of an anonymous Highlander, was designed by the Scottish architect James Gillespie Graham. The monument's location at Glenfinnan was made possible because in 1812 a new road - built by Thomas Telford - opened between Fort William to Arisaig.

Since 1938, the Glenfinnan Monument has been in the care of the National Trust for Scotland. The Trust have also constructed a visitor centre, which provides tickets, information and exhibitions, and a shop, cafe, and toilets. The tower has also become a monument to Alexander Macdonald, who died before its completion. Hundreds of Jacobite enthusiasts gather at the tower each year on 19 August to remember the Rising of '45.

Another old shot from our trip toe the wonderful state of Oregon. This spot from the women’s forum park provides an iconic view of the beautiful Columbia River Gorge. Its almost impossible not to go for a wide-angle lens here. And that’s exactly what I did, but I noticed that there were a lot of finer details in the scene even on a day when we had pretty flat light at sunset without much drama in the sky.

So, I attempted a pano stitch as it was getting darker by the minute. Unfortunately, couple of pics from the pano turned out to have some vibration in them teaching me the valuable lesson to always check for sharpness and focus. But this one was pretty decent with the vista house bathed in absolutely gorgeous golden light along with the cliffside.

Celý den všude pršelo, ale předpovědi slibovaly na západ ČR k večeru vyjasnění, tak jsme vyrazili na pár cílů, s plánem na večerní Loket. Vyšlo to dokonale, slunce začalo prosvěcovat mraky pár minut před západem a pak už se jen postupně měnilo světlo.

Tahle vyhlídka na Loket se mi moc líbí, i když teda nezavrhuju ani ostatní, každá má něco do sebe. Každopádně podzimní barvy stromů tomu sluší!

Nice night for a bit of evening photography.

Another evening out on Skye, for once the weather on a trip was holding nicely for me, I never have much luck with it usually... With the promise of a possible decent sunset I decided to head for the opposite West side of the Island and a new location for me, Neist Point, it isn't the easiest of places to get to due to the narrow twisty roads but very rewarding when you reach the end, similar to Elgol in that respect.

Arrived a few hours before sunset to have a good wander around and find a decent spot, finally settling up on the cliffs looking over the cliff line down to the lighthouse, the light show didn't disappoint and was beautiful to watch, the Outer Hebrides can be seen in the far right of the frame, South Uist and Barra below it I'm guessing...

The journey back to my tent was made a lot quicker in the dark by the nice local girl from Portree I met who was also out taking pictures, I wasn't sure of the route back so I followed her back to Portree in the car, she drove like Lewis Hamilton so I was back in under an hour which shouldn't have been possible... if you're reading this thanks very much I would definitely have got lost otherwise.

No other place screams Oregon more than the view of the Columbia River Gorge from the Women's Forum Park. This probably is the quintessential photo that comes up when you search for Oregon or Portland. So when we made our first trip to Portland, we planned our first sunset here. The park didn’t disappoint. The view from here is just outstanding. It truly showcases the vastness of the Columbia River and the gorge with the vista house to use as a reference for scale. Plus, the view is pointing east, so during sunset, the entire scene is bathed in warm golden light from the setting sun.

While the Pacific Northwest is known for its cloudy skies and rain, Summer tends to be clear and hot. So we were not lucky to get any dramatic skies, which I am told is a fall specialty. That being said, if you are visiting the Portland area, the women's forum park is a must-visit. You can't go wrong here with a classic landscape shot.

Sunset at Castle Stalker, Loch Linnhe

This is one of those wiil-it-work / won't-it-work shots. A strong wind from the sea made it difficult to stand upright, along with never-ending groups of tourists clustering around which made it impossible to set up the tripod, left me with one option: drop the ISO as low as possible, set the f/stop as small as it would go, brace myself against the fence and hope for the best. For a hand-held Long Exposure in such adverse conditions, I'm quite pleased with the result.

A very popular view over Prague from Hanavsky Pavillion. I had to squeeze in a small spot between a number of photographers who were obviously there as part of a workshop.
