Painted ladies
Painted Ladies - Postcard Row
by David ruiz luna

In American architecture, painted ladies are Victorian and Edwardian houses and buildings repainted, starting in the 1960s, in three or more colors that embellish or enhance their architectural details.

In 1963, San Francisco artist Butch Kardum began combining intense blues and greens on the exterior of his Italianate-style Victorian house. His house was criticized by some, but other neighbors began to copy the bright colors on their own houses. Kardum became a color designer, and he and other artists / colorists such as Tony Canaletich, Bob Buckter, and Jazon Wonders began to transform dozens of gray houses into Painted Ladies. By the 1970s, the colorist movement, as it was called, had changed entire streets and neighborhoods. This process continues to this day.

One of the best-known groups of "Painted Ladies" is the row of Victorian houses at 710–720 Steiner Street, across from Alamo Square park, in San Francisco. It is sometimes known as "Postcard Row"; they are also known as the Seven Sisters.

Wild balsamroot flowers, overlooking the Columbia River.

Rowena Crest, once known as "Rowena Bluffs", is the high point on the Oregon side of the Rowena Gap, and is located along the Historic Columbia River Highway at Columbia River Mile (RM) 180.5. Rowena Crest is part of Oregon's Mayer State Park. Downstream is Tom McCall Nature Preserve. Parking at the top of the crest provides spectacular views of the Columbia River, Mayer State Park, and across to Lyle, Washington and the mouth of the Klickitat River.

The 271 acres is located on the Rowena Plateau high above the Rowena Dell, which leads directly into the Columbia River Gorge. The plateau is covered in wildflowers, including lupine and balsamroot. There are even varieties of wildflowers here that are unique to the Gorge!

The wildflowers appear from late February to June, although they are in their prime in April and May.

Latourelle Falls, Oregon, in autumn.
Latourell Falls
by Bonnie Moreland

The falls plunge 224 feet over a massive wall of columnar basalt - some of the best formations in the Pacific Northwest - before cascading hastily towards the Columbia River. This waterfall is usually most recognized for the large patch of bright yellow lichen adorning the cliff face to the right of the falls, and this characteristic has led many famous photographers to give this location their treatment. The falls were named for Joseph Latourell, a well known settler of the area. It isn't known exactly when the falls were officially named. In 1887 Joseph Latourell was named postmaster of the Rooster Rock Post Office, one of the first in the area. Apparently the pronunciation of this waterfall is closer to the word lateral, then the fancy french way I was attempting.

Yaquina Bay Bridge, Newport, Oregon
Newport - Yaquina Bay Bridge
by Bonnie Moreland

The Yaquina Bay Bridge is an arch bridge that spans Yaquina Bay south of Newport, Oregon. It is one of the most recognizable of the U.S. Route 101 bridges designed by Conde McCullough. The Yaquina Bay Bridge is one of eleven major bridges on the Oregon Coast Highway designed by McCullough. It superseded the last ferry crossing on the highway.

Work on the Yaquina Bay Bridge began on August 1, 1934. The main arch was built in toward the center from the anchorages, using tiebacks to support the arch until it could be closed. The piers are supported by timber pilings driven to a depth of about 70 feet (21 m) below sea level. The project received funding from the Public Works Administration.

The bridge uses Art Deco and Art Moderne design motifs as well as forms borrowed from Gothic architecture. The Gothic influence is seen in the balustrade, which features small pointed arches, and in the arches of the side span piers. The ends of the bridge are augmented by pedestrian plazas that afford a view of the bridge and provide access to the parks at the landings by stairways. Pedestals were provided for proposed sculptures of seals, but the statues were never executed.

Hongkong Haze

by Michael

I took this photo the morning of my last day in Hongkong back in September. It didn't appear to be a spectacular sunrise that morning due to the lack of clouds.

But as the sun appeared there was this beautiful haze. This together with the warm light made the photo for me.

And a little announcement: till Sunday I have all my post processing tutorials at 33% off their normal price. Simply use "black" as discount code. You can find all my tutorials here.

When we started our road trip to Utah, one of my missions was to see all the horseshoe bends which it was famous for. I had visited the original horseshoe bend in Arizona several times so wanted to see other locations in southwest where the river does the same thing. There are multiple locations within Utah where this happens actually. There is goosenecks overlook near Capitol Reef where Sulpher creek does a horse shoe bend. Then there is the Dead Horse Point state park where the Colorado river does some spectacular turns.

But the real stunner is the Goosenecks state park close to monument valley. Here the San Juan river is twisted around to roughly 25 horseshoe bends within a couple of miles (I counted by zooming into the location on google maps), even though only about 5 is visible from the view point. This is pano shot I created at the park, one of the rare moments I wished I had access to a drone.

Is that right? Before I stand corrected I know that another piece of architecture bares the same name. I just thought this name for this image would be perfectly appropriate and it goes with what I feel when looking at it. I shot this frame back at the end of 2017 and editing this piece is way overdue. What do you think?

Latourell Falls located in Columbia River Gorge was one of the falls in my list that I missed during our Last trip to Portland. So I was determined to include that this time and take the relatively easy 3-mile hike to the upper falls. The hike was not very crowded and was pretty shade so we had a good time doing this hike at a brisk pace.

At 249ft straight drop, this is one massive waterfall with lots of spray and truly one of the best things to do when its 90 degrees outside.
