When you visit Arches National Park, you be dumbfounded, astonished, open-mouthed with the spectacle you can see. It's really a natural wonder.

This valley is the Park Avenue Trail, one of the first major attractions within Arches National Park. It is a one-mile trail that follows the bottom of a canyon at the feet of some of the park’s gigantic and well-known monoliths.

Today's picture is another old image from our trip to southern Utah’s beautiful Arches National Park. As a landscape icon, the delicate arch requires no introduction, it's usually featured in all its glory on almost all tourism-related documents created by Utah and even the United States travel brochures. The day we decided to hike up there, we had some beautiful light as the sun went down both on the arch and the snow-capped mountains in the background.

The hike to get to the location is a short but involves following a trail that mostly lays over a large flat rock which is devoid of many markers even in broad daylight. A thing to keep in mind if you plan to return after the sun goes down like we did. We were there in the middle of winter on a moonless night and my plan was to track my hike using the all trails app and then follow the path back to the car. We kept our iPhones charged and were completely confident that we will be able to get back as we stayed to take some beautiful star-filled nightscapes. Regrettably, we failed to account for the thinness obsession phone makers have these days that fails to give the phone batteries any cold protection. As soon as we took our phones out to check the paths, the phone battery went from mid 80% to zero and the phones died and became unresponsive. We were left to trace back our way in complete darkness without any way to identify the hiking trail and while wandering we met a couple of other hikers who were in the same predicament. Fortunately, we found a way to get off the rock soon and was able to get back to the marked trail to the parking lot. We learned a valuable lesson that day regarding preparedness in the desert and how quickly a situation can turn against you.

Arches National Park is such a wonderful little spot located north of Moab UT. This park is home to over 2000 of the natural sandstone arches and visiting some of the most famous arches in the park can take quite a fair bit of time. During our visit to Moab a good bit of time was taken by some of the landmark locations like delicate arch, the fins, turret arch, etc. and we only had a mid morning time slot to visit the stunning North Window arch.

The North Windoe is basically a giant hole in a whuge sandstone wall and is famous for a view of the turret arch through the window. Unfortunately, we visited during a time when the shadow of the turret arch was not favorable for that composition. So, I Settled for a nice shot of the north window against the backdrop of the vivid blue sky.

One of the coolest locations we visited while at the Arches national park was the fins known for the Sand Dunes arch. At the fins you are seeing basically how arches are formed in real time. This was an impressive location and we visited just after sunrise so I had the sun behind the rock formations providing some dramatic light in the sky.

We totally underestimated this part of the park and only visited them on the last day. I would love to visit more of this area next time I am at Arches national park.

Three Gossips

So far in our five years in the Western United States, we have been to almost all the National Parks near us and I have to say Utah’s Zion and Arches have the most scenic locations per sq km of any National Parks. I first visited Arches National Park on a frozen December night and the very next morning we drove into the park well before sunrise. Unlike any other National Park, the stunning scenery that makes this park so busy during the day comes to light merely a couple of miles into the park when you come by the courthouse rocks.

This shot is a straight on composition of the Three Gossips that I made from across the road right at the bottom of the courthouse towers. The usual viewpoint is from the side but the straight on composition really interested me with the symmetry of the cliffs surrounding the pinnacles. This was taken a bit later after the sun rose a little and nice warm light flooded the scene. This composition is a simple panorama shot with frames sharing about a 3rd with the next image. Also if you are sure that your photography will include a lot of panoramas the try to invest in a sturdy tripod and a panoramic head. Most tripod ballheads these days comes with a panoramic functionality but in my opinion, having a pano swivel at the base of the ballhead is pretty useless. If the swivel is on the base you will spend a ton of time leveling the camera and even a slight leveling error will result in wonky composition. An Ideal panoramic head will have the swivel function close to the clamp which helps to level the head even if the tripod is not perfectly level. I personally use an Arca Swiss monoball p1 and it has been a great head for the past eight-plus years.

Delicate arch located in the Arches National Park is one of the star attractions of the American southwest and when you consider the number of stunning vistas and geological features in the area, that no small achievement. We planned to get sunset at this amazing place on the second day at Moab. The weather was supposed to be perfect for the short but strenuous hike which we had to do to get to the arch. The only problem was there were a lot of other people who had the same idea and we were quite surprised to see the number of people at the arch location.

So getting a clear shot of the beautiful arch became more than a challenge as photographers mostly were set up to get the arch and mountains in the back and people were constantly walking into the frame to get their shots next to the arch. Thankfully as the sunset reached someone started yelling and the tourists were held off from the arch so we could all take the shot for a couple of minutes. I was using my big stopper to slow the shots enough to remove people and got this intensely colored shot of the stunning Delicate Arch.

Quick tip for those planning this hike, make sure you know your way back if staying on for the stars as we did. As most of the hike is done on top of a giant rock, it’s very difficult to keep track of the hiking path in the dark.
