River Thames

Westminster Storm
Westminster Bridge to Big Ben
by Michael

As an interlude between all the New Zealand Photos I want to show another photo from that incredible evening in London back in August. To see such awesome light at such a great location was really something special. I felt very lucky :-)

Processing on this one was my usual Exposure Blending, then some dreamy photo techniques and to finish it some contrast and color work. I explain all of this in my video tutorials, which I've recorded over the last years.

cheers

You can not miss this London cliché photo. Everyone knows it and saw a hundred fantastic photos, but when you're there and wait for the biplane buses to come along it is not as easy as it seems.

It's the first time I've been back to this part of London for quite a few years, so It was good to have a spare hour doing a bit of sightseeing. I've always loved Tower Bridge because it is such a quirky, but great piece of engineering.

Protection
Thames Barrier from Southeast
by Pete Rowbottom

Another shot from the Thames Barrier in Greenwich, with sunset rapidly approaching there was a good amount of golden soft light to play with, the lower light allowing a decent long exposure time, just showing of a lone section of the river defence, these to me are a very interesting and unusual architectural design, almost space age, and set against some recognisable shapes in the City make for some unusual images when coupled with a long exposure.

Silence
Westminster Bridge to Big Ben

I was really lucky to get anything here today as it was pouring down and I got a royal soaking before I got here, I decided to visit a spot undercover right next to here to try and wait it out, with a few mins amazingly it did stop and allowed to to not only get a nice long exposure with the low light but also manage to get all the storm clouds, with 30 minutes it had completely cleared and was sunny for the rest of the day, well worth a soaking, to think I almost gave up for the day.... Also pleased with the colour version, but I'm really feeling the black and white vibe at the moment, especially for stuff like this, just feels a lot more emotive to me when you remove the distraction of colour.

Thames Barrier from Visitors' Centre
Thames Barrier from Southwest
by jim stephenw

The Thames Barrier spans 520 metres across the River Thames near Woolwich, and it protects 125 square kilometres of central London from flooding caused by tidal surges. It has 10 steel gates that can be raised into position across the River Thames. When raised, the main gates stand as high as a 5-storey building and as wide as the opening of Tower Bridge. Each main gate weighs 3,300 tonnes. The barrier is closed under storm surge conditions to protect London from flooding from the sea. It may also be closed during periods of high flow over Teddington Weir to reduce the risk of river flooding in some areas of west London including Richmond and Twickenham. The Thames Barrier will then remain closed over high water until the water level downstream of the Thames Barrier has reduced to the same level as upstream. This is a managed process to provide for different circumstances, and takes about 5 hours. The Thames Barrier is then opened, allowing the water upstream to flow out to sea with the outward-bound tide.

"Dusk at the London Eye" * London England
The London Eye from Westminster Bridge
by Dominic Nessi
  • The London Eye, or the Millennium Wheel, is a cantilevered observation wheel on the South Bank of the River Thames in London. It is Europe's tallest cantilevered observation wheel, and is the most popular paid tourist attraction in the United Kingdom with over 3 million visitors annually.

The structure is 135 meters (443 ft) tall and the wheel has a diameter of 120 meters (394 ft). When it opened to the public in 2000 it was the world's tallest Ferris wheel.

Supported by an A-frame on one side only, unlike the taller Nanchang and Singapore wheels, the Eye is described by its operators as "the world's tallest cantilevered observation wheel".

The London Eye adjoins the western end of Jubilee Garden, on the South Bank of the River Thames between Westminster Bridge and Hungerford Bridge beside County Hall, in the London Borough of Lambeth.

Under Blackfriars Bridge
Under Blackfriars Bridge
by Alan Taylor

In 1774 the new bridge was mentioned in a popular song in Charles Dibdin's opera The Waterman, referring to the boatmen who used to carry fashionable folks to Vauxhall Gardens and Ranelagh Gardens.

"And did you not hear of the jolly young waterman, Who at Blackfriars Bridge used for to ply? And he feathered his oars with such skill and dexterity, Winning each heart and delighting each eye."

London Sunrise
Good Morning Mr Sun Said Tower Bridge
by J. Chea

View of HMS Belfast and Tower bridge from London Bridge London, United Kingdom

This was a rather impromptu shot, originally intended to photograph sunrise at the Millennium bridge to avoid the crowd. Unfortunately, half of the bridge was under renovation and there was an unsightly fence running the whole length of the bridge. The clouds were starting to catch some beautiful light and I do not have a composition to work with. Slightly annoyed, I decided to savage the situation by rushing down to London bridge to photograph the Tower bridge in the beautiful morning light.

After a good twenty minutes of brisk walking, I was still too late to capture the beautiful predawn light as the sun had just risen above the horizon. Fortunately, there was sufficient atmosphere and buildings to filter the harsh sunlight, creating a soft back-light for the tower bridge and HMS Belfast. I managed to capture the whole scene in one exposure, making editing relatively straightforward. I was glad I managed to adapt to the situation quickly and come away an image I was happy with. It made getting out of bed at 5 am worthwhile!

It has to be one of the most bonkers buildings in London, why would anyone want to build something that looks like a Mayan temple on the south bank of the Thames?

I have to say it does look very solid though!

Snow storm over Battersea Power Station

View On Black Here for best effect A snow storm suddenly unveils itself over Battersea power station, it was still really sunny as this happened behind me, but in under 5 mins later it was total blizzard conditions, hardly any light, and impossible to shoot, right place right time! Bizarre weather but photography wise, perfect.

Last monday I was in photographers heaven for a few minutes. London before sunset with a storm front rolling in from the east presented the best photo opportunity in this year so far and I was in exactly the right place.

I have an Article on my blog where I provide some behind the scenes info to how this photo came to be, if you are interested.

The continuation of my London series with photo number three taken during that dramatic sunset at Westminster. Right after taking this bracketed exposure I ran down to find cover under the bridge, where I took the photo I posted last week. I have one more photo, which I might show you sometime. I was so lucky that evening. 4 big shots out of 20 Minutes of shooting is quite a good rate for me.

Vauxhall Bridge
Vauxhall Bridge
by Alan Taylor

Vauxhall Bridge is a Grade II* listed steel and granite deck arch bridge in central London. It crosses the River Thames in a south–east north–west direction between Vauxhall on the south bank and Pimlico on the north bank. Opened in 1906, it replaced an earlier bridge, originally known as Regent Bridge but later renamed Vauxhall Bridge, built between 1809 and 1816 as part of a scheme for redeveloping the south bank of the Thames. The original bridge was built on the site of a former ferry.

The building of both bridges was problematic, with both the first and second bridges requiring several redesigns from multiple architects. The original bridge, the first iron bridge over the Thames, was built by a private company and operated as a toll bridge before being taken into public ownership in 1879. The second bridge, which took eight years to build, was the first in London to carry trams and later one of the first two roads in London to have a bus lane.

In 1963 it was proposed to replace the bridge with a modern development containing seven floors of shops, office space, hotel rooms and leisure facilities supported above the river, but the plans were abandoned because of costs. With the exception of alterations to the road layout and the balustrade, the design and appearance of the current bridge has remained almost unchanged since 1907. The bridge today is an important part of London's road system and carries the A202 road across the Thames.
